Another newbie

Post by Sniper911 »

Hello from Va. been lurking for a while and this seems like a pretty informative place to hang out. Here's what I've built this week and I'd liketo know what the experts think of this first build....6 gal SS Stockpot with 304 SS sheetting for lid, with an 8 in thimble to slip the 2 gal head on, 1.5 inch copper piping 90 degrees off the top of the head running horizontally for 12 inches into 3/4 copper dropping 8 inches into a 3 gal SS thumper. Leaving the thumper with 1/2 inch copper up 6 inched and horizontally 8 inches into a 3/8 inch worm contained in a SS water can (fire extinguisher). Just finished this yesterday. I'll try to post some pics in the next day or so. But if the above makes any sense, it would be nice to hear what some of the more experienced stiller here think. I've gotten plenty of experience in "tasting" but not a lot in stilling, and can user all the help I can get ....thanks.

Sounds like a nice 'traditional' style pot still. I like the worm myself. I have not done a thumper yet, I usually do double runs, so it is 'like' a thumper. Good luck. Find yourself some techniques that work, and continue forward with that.

Welcome sniper. I'm so pleased to see no mention of a thermometer. :) Good stillin.
Simple potstiller. Slow, single run.
(50 litre, propane heated pot still. Coil in bucket condenser - No thermometer, No carbon)
The Reading Lounge AND the Rules We Live By should be compulsory reading

Cumudgeon and loving it.
