Hi everyone, I am new to distilling. I got the urge to learn how to produce my own alcohol for knowledge and other reasons. I could only find limited information on the subject so I purchased the book "The Secrets of Building an Alcohol Producing Still". I am taking distilling step by step. I have begun by learning to malt corn. I built wood, and screen sprouting trays. Soaked my feed corn for 24 hours and then spread it out on my ten stacked sprouting trays. Now my corn is just about ready to be dried. I bought two inexpensive food dehydrators at Harbor Freight and will dry the corn in them when it is ready. (Hopefully in the next two days). The only problem I have had is that 30% of the corn has just not done anything. The rest has sprouted nicely.
I am looking at purchasing a still. I have seen some really nice looking copper stills on Ebay. If anyone has any experience with these please let me know. Once I buy my still I will begin the fermentation process by getting a couple of glass carboys. Luckily there is a distillation/ beer brewing equipment seller here in Georgia that has been a great resource for me. I am looking to do a Corn mash to learn the process and then learn to flavor. I am really appreciative of the website because this is one of the only places with any good information. Thank you.

Welcome aboard.
Sounds like you are really getting into it. That's good. Just keep up the research and don't get to far ahead of yourself.
EBay where do I start? The crap on there is a joke. To put it bluntly. Do your research on stills. There are many out there that are just trying to make a buck off unsuspecting uneducated people. Some are just outright con artists. If you don't want to build your own. That is what I would recommend by the way. But if you chose not to. There are reputable builders out there. That provide a good product and support to go with it. And there are some builders around the forum that would be happy to help you. Just don't go buy one on impulse because you like what the builder claims. If it sounds to good. It just mite be. Research and time will find you a still that will last you a lifetime. Impulsive buying will get you a still that will need work before you can use it safely and leave you wanting something better.

Thank you Mr. Piss I appreciate it. I found out after doing some research on the cheap rigged stills, and the good copper stills kind of what to look for. The person on Ebay that I have seen two good looking stills are made by Ebay user PioneerCopperWorks. They look like good legitimate stills at a reasonable price (but what do I know?). This is the one I am looking at:

I would like to build my own, but I really just want to see what one looks like first hand, and then try to replicate it. I am horrible at building from plans. The book I have has a great detailed plan for building a still, but right now I am having a hard time finding the large copper sheets needed to construct it.

Also, if there are any builders on the site that read my Welcome post, please say hi I would prefer to get a still from someone on the site. Thanks
