Dodge City Distillery. Let down.

Post by Prairiepiss »

This is a second go at this thread. Browser crashed first time.

I was driving to a customers location and noticed a new restaurant. It had whiskey barrels stacked out front so I had to look. The name was Dodge city distillery. Wow cool went a little further and seen a big copper still in the window next to the front door. Yes. I about wrecked trying to get a look at it. I was ecstatic could this be what I was looking for. So as soon as I stopped I looked it up on the interweb. Yes its a brewpub style restaurant but they distill on site. So I gathered from their website. Which was not very informative. Didn't even list what they made really. But they said they had a German made 150 lt still. The pics they had looked like they pulled them from someone else's website. One even had a sign for another distillery in New York. But after looking at their site I was under the impression they did distill on site. So I sent my wife a text and said we are doing out and sent her a link. She responded Let's go. Web we didn't get to go Friday. And I was thinking about it the rest of the day and night. How are they getting away with this? I have not seen a distillpub type setup. I didn't think it was possible? So Saturday I spent all day on the Kansas ABC site. Downloading every pdf file I could. Looking through them to see if I could find anything that remotely seemed like it could work. Nothing! I found nothing and most of it led me to beleave there is mo chance in hell it would happen. Kansas Alcohol laws are one of the toughest in the nation. Go figure. So we just had to go check it out. Made arrangements to meet the guy we have been talking brewpub with.

So we go out there. I get out of the car. And you can see this giant copper beauty as you are walking up. I was giddy as a school girl. The closer I got the more disappointed I got. This thing had not been taken care of. It was nasty copper looked like crap. Wait its not even hooked up. :wtf: Mater of fact its not even put together right. That don't go there. And that needs to be hooked up over there. The only things hooked up and working were the lights for the sightglasses and boiler. It was at that point I realised this nice still was not in use. And it was just part of the decor. So we went in. It was not really setup very good. The decor was really Bla. And we walked by the still to be seated. I got a quick look again. Yep the other side looked as bad. After we were seated I got up and went back to get a better look from the inside. They probably had to clean my hand and nose prints off the glass. And mop up the drool. But I pulled myself away and went back to my seat. When the rest of our party arrived the waiter came back over. I asked what they had to offer. He said we have our handmade house vodka bourbon and tequila. I thought that's odd how are they making tequila? So I asked are you distilling on site? No no we can't its illegal. Our vodka is distilled down the street for us. Our bourbon is distilled in Tennessee for us. And the tequila is made in Mexico for us. They are all made with our special recipes to our standards. I said so why are they advertising otherwise? He said they had planned to start up a distillery off site and do it them selves. I left it at that. They had a sampler platter of all their house brand drinks. It was a shot of each. Six total a vodka, serino pepper infused vodka, white tequila, gold tequila, bourbon, and a single malt bourbon. So he explained. The vodka was a real nice American vodka. It was actually pretty good. The best of the six. The serino pepper vodka was efen hot. But it had a nice flavor to it. And would make a killer bloody marry. I came stand tequila. But my wife said the two were pretty good. I thought they tasted like crap. But that's why I don't drink it. The bourbons hmm well they were ok. Just ok. Nothing toake me buy it over another store bought. It had a nice smell nice buttery notes. But the taste just didn't reflect it. Our guest ordered a bourbon and coke. It mixed well with the coke. But still not memorable. It was missing something I just couldn't put my finger on it. Maybe vanilla? Then we ordered our food. I got the porterhouse. Hey I haven gotten to eat out in 2 months. I was getting my steak on. wife ordered a steak marinated in a bourbon soy marinade. Guest ordered a grilled talapia. Got the food and it was just Bla like the rest of the experience. My porterhouse was the best of the three. And it was just a steak nothing special about it. Other then it was cooked perfect for me.

So all and all it was a big disappointment all around.

Now I have to search out whoever the distillery down the street is that makes their vodka for them.

I did snap some pics of the still. Not the best from my phone. And the glass made it hard to get good pics.

That's a pretty expensive piece of decoration they have there. I wonder if they got the cart before the horse and bought the still before they knew what the laws were.

That's what I thought. That's a big chunk of money for decoration. Ain't no wonder the rest of the place is sparsely decorated.

That's the vibe I got from the waiter. But he was just a waiter.

And I don't think I mentioned it in my post. You could tell they bought this still used. And whoever dismantled it didn't do it careingly.

I actually recognize the picture with the NY sign, I've been in that room.

Fourway You reminded me I ment to post a link to their wonderful website. :wtf:
http://dodgecitydistillery.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

And to go back and look at those pics again. They don't have a pic one of their still on their site.

And it made me sick seeing such a nice piece of machinery going to waste. It needs to be polished up and used. I could hear it calling to me. Take me home with you.

Oh and the waiter did say they just started selling the vodka at stores. Very local at this point. He could only name one. The vodka is called Miss Kitty's Velvet Vodka.. I Googled it and only came up with a Facebook page for it.

Keep an eye on the restaurant for signs they are struggling and may close up shop. You might be able to buy this rig before it goes to auction.
