Getting yeast from commercial distilleries?

Post by MontanaMule »

Many microbreweries I go to are more than willing to give free yeast samples for home brewers. Has any one had luck getting yeast from distilleries?
The man bangin' on the door yelled "Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms!"....I just assumed it was more supplies.

In the distilling community they use their own yeast. Usually top secret. So they don't like to share. Maybe some of the smaller micro distillerys mite? But they are probably using a commercialy available yeast.

That's just what I have read. I have not tried to get any myself. They would probably look at you funny knowing its illegal.

I just did the tour through distillers row in Portland Oregon and all of them were pretty tight lipped when I asked about what type yeast they used. :shh:

Small guy by me just says whiskey yeast. I Bet its whitelabs. He says its very close to bakers yeast after tests.
