Kansas clean distilled whisky?

Post by Prairiepiss »

I found a bottle of this on the shelf the other day. It kind of disturbed me. But also intrigued me. If I remember correctly the bottle said something about it being a mix of aged whisky and a neutral spirit. But the website says its just a whisky ran through a reflux column for a near vodka whiskey? The color is a very faint brownish yellow. Actually looks like crap to me. Clear but the color is just not right. Simple bottle very little markings. To show the color. Or lack there of. All they had was a fifth. A little in the pricey side. So I was hesitant to buy at that time. I plan to buy a bottle soon. Just to try it. But I thought I would share with you all. And see what you all thought about it. To me it looks like a marketing gimmick to get the non whiskey drinkers to drink it. Or maybe a failed attempt to make a vodka. So they are just trying to sell it as lite whiskey. The website says its made with winter wheat? But I thought the bottle said just grain no mention of wheat. If it would have said wheat on it I would have bought it.

All and all it just kinda looks like someone trying to get into the trendy spirits market. I mite just be pissed because they took my idea to market. Before I did.

Ok now I'm really disappointed. It's produced by Fabulous American beverage. Out of New York. WTFlip? It's not even made in Kansas. Bastards! And what kind of name is that for an alcohol producer? Give me a break.
Here is another article about them.

Looks to me like they're distilllin vodka from wheat and then blending it with some aged whisky they're gettin somewhere. It doesn't say anything about them distillin the whisky, or agin it. Just another flavored vodka gimmick. I do believe I'd rather try Odin's Rye Eau de Vie, a truely genuine "clean" whisky.

I love the web site basically saying aging is bad for whisky. Like 20 yr old metros in thumping clubs drinking plain label commercial rotgut to excess know anything about good alcohol. Mr P, tasting notes would be awesome but I would understand if you didn't want to spend a dime on it just to taste it.

Kansas Prairie Piss is a much better name for a trendy flavored vodka!

Ok gentlemen I bought a bottle tonight. $24.99 for a 750ml bottle. Nice bottle for the collection. Any way. Upon opening the bottle I was amazed at the smells I didn't get. It smells almost neutral. So I poured a glass on the rocks (made with RO water). Now I can detect a slight fruity smell. Almost a fresh coconut smell. Can't quite put my finger on it yet. It actually smells good. Maybe a hint of heads. Not much if any. Now for the taste. I'm getting a nice caramel flavor. It's not strong but it lingers on the pallet a bit. It reminds me of my all bran white dog but with more depth. I'm assuming that is coming from the aged stuff that is added to it. It has a slight burn on the front side but bairly any on the backside if any at all.

As much as I wanted to hate it. I can't. This to me is a nice product. It's not going to appeal to a hard core whiskey drinker. It would be to light for them. But it isn't vodka. I think I might could like to drink this.

I will try it again later and report back again. I had just finished eating and had an Irish stout before hand. So my pallet may be off. And or I may be off at this point.

Seems like many drinks depend on "marketing", not so much on "making". As long as you have a story that sells, the product will follow. This product seems to target "Kansas" as well as "cocktails". A fancy combination? Never been to Kansas, but somehow ...

Having ridden a motorcycle across Kansas at least a half dozen times, I can tell you everything you need to know about it.
1. It is flat,
2. All the roads are dead straight,
3. The temperature is 110F (44C).

(Sorry PP, but that's the truth) :D

Hi Folks. I'm the creator of Kansas Clean Distilled Whiskey. It's encouraging to see your discussion, especially so early in our infancy. We've only been in the market for six months.

Herein are a few thoughts you may wish to take into account in your discourse over our whiskey. We are indeed distilled in Kansas. We're bottled in Rochester, NY. Logistically it makes sense for us to do so. We're a spirit whiskey, a blend of aged whiskey and neutral grain. Many blended American whiskies and Canadian whiskies contains neutral grain. Spirit Whiskey is a category of whiskey defined by the TTB. It's not something we made up.

There are a couple of other spirit whiskies currently in the market, an excellent one in particular from the Texas Hill Country. I encourage you to try them all, if for anything to establish a benchmark. Inasmuch as you wouldn't compare a Single Malt to a Rye whiskey, I think its sensible and fair to compare spirits whiskies to other spirit whiskies.

I very much appreciate the one contributor to this thread who tried our whiskey and offered their candid response. If indeed others here are responding negatively to the brand, I suspect it's the marketing and advertising on our website, since there's not much else to respond to if you haven't tasted it. Here's the explanation behind the marketing. If you're on this site it's fair to guess you guys are whiskey fanatics. Like me. But the truth is, less than 23% of men who enjoy spirits enjoy whiskey--and that's an aggregate of ALL types of whiskey. The numbers are worse for women at around 7%. Typically people respond disfavorably to the taste. I think it's because we're asking people to dive off the high platform before even becoming acquainted with the water.

Most whiskey marketers know this, so they create branding and advertising that appeals to older, more educated, and frankly, time-worn pallets. Indeed the AVERAGE age of a whiskey drinker is 52. I simply think that's wrong. More people should enjoy it. And younger consumer shouldn't be deprived of the terrific taste experience whiskey has to offer. And thus I created Kansas, to welcome people to the possibilities of whiskey.

Our marketing is meant to speak to consumers to overcome their preconceptions. Preconceptions which, are in fairness to them, fully legitimized by all other whiskey marketing and advertising; old men, ships, game bird, etc., all of which are specifically targeted towards people who already enjoy whiskey, to convey heritage and tradition. Of all people, you guys know it's only chemistry and some artistry, and that labels have nothing to do with the liquid inside Kansas takes a different tact, poking a bit of fun at the industry and the billions spent marketing to older consumers.

If you do get a chance to try our whiskey, I'd surely like to hear from you. I think, I suspect, you may be pleasantly surprised. We're pretty proud of our product, having won a silver at the SF wine and spirits comp (blind tasting) and our recent Anthony Dias 92 rating in Tasting Panel.

Well thanks for stopping by and posting PGoldman. It's nice when a producer actually stops buy and posts more info.

Like I said I did like the product so far. I don't think I gave it a fair tasting. The stout I was drinking before hand mite of skewed it. But I bought the bottle. So I will be trying it again. Soon.

I would like to ask a few questions if you don't mind?

Can you tell us more about the whiskey you are blending with the neutral? I'm assuming its an all wheat whisky? What ABV is it taken off at? Oak barrels for how long?

Is the neutral a wheat product too?

Yes, thx for joining our little discusion here Mr. Goldman. To correct a misconception, many members here are not whiskey fanatics, although many are. More than anything we love the craft and that is the reason for our involvement. Personally, I am indeed a fan of whiskey and have enjoyed it for many years. Now that I can produce my own, and at a very high quality, I haven't bought any for a good while.

If you have time we would like to know more of your operation, of course w/o giving us any of your secrets.

Thanks for the questions. The whiskey we use to blend is is barrel aged two years, sometimes a little longer. The neutral is predominantly amber winter wheat, along with a blend of other grains including pearl millet. I hope you appreciate that I can't betray too much, as we have something unique (for the time being).

Very good Mr Goldman. Thanks for the response. I was assuming it was 2 years on the barrel. Was just checking thought maybe you mite be like some of the other new starts using the smaller barrels.

Winter wheat with pearl millet in the grain bill. Very nice. I knew there was a little something in there that I couldn't put my finger on. Now I'm looking forward to trying it again.

I may not agree with your marketing. But I do understand the reasoning behind it. And you have came up with a product that could actually pull it off. So best of luck to you.
