black floaties in distillate

Post by astronomical »

I've been at it for a while and now I'm getting some floating stuff in my distillate. I had some on my rye run and now I have some on my rum wash. It wasn't puking much, but, it was definately a brown tinged strip on this rum run. Im going to do a vinegar run since I haven't in quite a while. Is this something to be worried about? Should I still do a spirit run with my low wines?

There has been no changes to the still and its been run plenty of times. I'm kinda boggled as to what is causing this. Perhaps she just needs a good cleaning.

It looks a bit like oil and has a sheen to it... This molasses was fortified with oil... I'm just curious if anyone else has experienced this.

I wouldn't worry about it, your rig just needs a cleaning. It does make your booze look like crap though. Run it through a coffee filter and it should clean up.

I've done more vinegar washes (two thorough cleaning runs) and run more alcohol through and I'm still getting nasties.. I have a strong suspicion that it was oils in the molasses that did this. I keep getting yellow tinged distillate and an oily surface.. Its really pissing me off

i took my element out and inspected it and its immaculate... im guessing there is a bunch of oil caked up in the keg where i cant see.... I have some 2 Inch sanitary caps so I could fill it with whatever and let it soak upside down... any suggestions?

could it be rust from a shitty weld? perhaps i need to repassivate it or something.... I have no clue.. its been working just fine for a long time... didnt mess up until the molasses

You could pull the elements out cap the mounts off. Add a cleaner and a piece of stainless chain. Then can the top off and shake and swirl the chain around inside the keg. The chain would do some scrubbing for you?
