Little or nothing to do with distillation.

anyone ever use Prestige Essences?

Post by golfgod04 »

my friend gave me a Prestige Sambuca essence bottle so I can try to make my own Sambuca. Has anyone ever used one? Any advice? The recipe says to use Vodka or you can use EverClear 190 proof. If you use EverClear, do you use the same amount of everclear as you would Vodka? Thanks in advance.

Probably not, Vodka is usually 80 proof. You will have to proof the Everclear.

Proofing is diluting the alcohol to the desired proof. Or drinking strength. Most vodkas are sold at 80 proof or
40% ABV. 150 proof vodka isn't that easy to find. Unless you make it yourself. Everclear isn't going to be as clean as a vodka.

Now if the recipe calls for it. It should tell you how much. And if it is calling for something that high proof. It must be diluting it to a drinking strength?

Can you post what the directions say to do?

Some use essences around here. Not many do. Most would rather make it from scratch then buying a bottle and mixing. So you may do a search and find a good recipe for what you want to make.

And step on over to the welcome center and give us an introduction.

The Directions say

Pour contents of this bottle and 160 grams of sugar into a 750 ml bottle. Then fill 3/4 full with 50 to 70%vodka (100 to 140proof or use Everclear for a better taste) and shake until the sugar has dissolved. Top up the bottle with water and shake until the contents have fully blended.

The recipe has you proofing it by adding water. If you substitute the 190 grain for the 150 vodka it will be stronger.

That recipe with 536ml of 70% ABV vodka will make it around 50% ABV when done.
If you were to use 95% ABV grain alcohol use 400ml instead. And top off to 750ml That will give you approx the same 50% when done. Or dilution the 95% to 70% before you make it. Calculator on the parent site can help you figure out the dilution ratios.

Grain alcohol is sold at different ABVs anywhere from 150proof to 190 proof. Depending on what state you may live in.
