My Wooden? Boiler
Any post about a boiler that is not made from a keg seems to get a default response that usually starts with “you should have used a keg because………….”
I did not use a keg - because;
The cost of a keg is more than my budget
My simple hand tools will bounce off a keg
I do not have cutting/welding equipment or skills
I do not have a car to take the keg to a fabricator
The nearest fabricator is two bus rides plus a 1000m walk away.
Where's the fun in getting someone else to make it?
In the event of scorching the inside of the keg, I do not have the physical attributes to be able to shake the keg with a chain or similar cleaning aid inside it – I also do not have a chain. I much prefer the notion of being able to take the lid off to clean it.
I cannot get crabs & lobsters thru a 3 “clover clamp.
Anyone following my posts will know that I have always leaned towards a stockpot with internal electric heater, while I was looking for a suitable pot I stumbled on a second hand 2.5kW - 6 gallon tea urn (Burco) for £25.00, I spent about £15 pounds more on other bits and pieces including screws, nuts and bolts, varnish, 2”x1” and a broom handle. A lot of the timber cladding & lid is cut from recycled floorboards.
All in all £40 / £45 so far to get me started, I will be adding refill port, sight glass, pressure gauge / switch & thermometer as time goes by.

Sweet!!!! I am a huge fan of wood. What species is it? Very nice workmanship! Are the two smaller openings in the top for a sight glass and filler port? The wood surrounding should give you some insulation properties evening out your heat. Good camouflage too. Please keep tha pics coming and let us know how she works.....

Also as a woodworker... That is sweet.
Only thing I'd add would be a couple of iron bands - just for looks.

Re: My Wooden? Boiler
That's a beauty. Who needs a keg when you've got that kinda talent.
As an aside, I have a 55 gallon wine barrel that I sometimes think would make a nice wooden boiler.

Re: My Wooden? Boiler
Thanks for all the kind words, I did not set out with the intention of making a pretty still, it just turned out that way.
Here are three more snaps with the business end in position. The cooling and drain lines still need plumbing in and will be hard fastened to the wall to stop any oscillations.

Re: My Wooden? Boiler
How does the water flow go?
Re: My Wooden? Boiler
There are two cooling water lines and one backwash line each with its own control valve.
The cooling water lines feed an inner coil with a cold finger, and an outer coil. The outputs go into a tundish so that I can see the amount of flow and the effect that the adjustments to the valves make.

Re: My Wooden? Boiler
I had a look at your boka build thread Brian. Nice work as well. I admire your "thinking outside the box" As an artist I am always encouraging members to build them pretty or a little different. There is no reason that your line of thinking should not extend to kegs as well. I vision decorative boxes or cabinets that house a keg boiler. It could be as nice as fine furniture or as simple as a flower pot box. Well Done.
Re: My Wooden? Boiler
make a false top...disguised as a flower pot.
Re: My Wooden? Boiler
My current thinking is to camouflage the column as a coat / hat stand with the boiler for umberella's and walking sticks

Beautiful work and great way to hold down top

Re: My Wooden? Boiler
I really like those lid clamps and I can see that idea being incorporated into one of my boilers. Is it just wood insulation or did you put anything between the wood and the boiler?
Re: My Wooden? Boiler
I was undecided about bonding the wood to the boiler with silicone, I tried a few staves to see how it would work out without it and it was such a good fit I just carried on.
I tapered the stave and placed it in position, then drilled through it sideways into the next stave, put 5 screws in each and then repeated it 27 times. It was very straight forward and quick, probably only took a couple of evenings.
The clamps which are only replacing a paper clip are way over the top, but they look nice and have a very positive feel when you are doing them up.

Sometimes this site just makes me smile. This is one of those times. That is a lovely still you have there. It is not something I would have thought of, but it just reminds of how people look at problems differently, and come up with their own soloutions. Very nicely done.

A-OK ! ! !

It is not the matter, nor, the space between the matter,
but rather, it is that finite point at which the two meet,
that, and only that, is what is significant...........
(Of course, I could be wrong) ..........
