I received (3) 1.3 gallon oak barrels from Mexico. The spout is Aluminum. Inside i can see silicone on the joints and one of the side panels on the iside is painted and has a number painted on it.
Could be lead based paint. My question is how safe are these things for high proof alcohol. Any thoughts?

Yeah, no Fing way. Paint on the inside, aluminum spigot, silicone to keep it form leaking...would make a decent planter I guess. I don't even think I would chop them up for sticks. Are you sure they are oak?

They are oak, but i will try to return them. If the guy will not take them back i will post the company name so others do not buy them.

iv seen horror stories of Mexican barrels on wine forums,,apparently they use used lumber.

Its probably wax and not silicone inside.
