Re: Proofing apple pie?
You know the proof from what you put in it. For instance, you might put in 300ml of 60% and 300ml of 5% cider with 300ml of apple juice. Then add 175g of sugar and end up with 1000ml of apple pie.twalk39 wrote:How do I proof apple pie moonshine? Doesnt the sugar throw off the hydrometer?
About a third of this is zero proof. A third was 5% now watered down 3 fold to about 1.5% and the spirit is equally watered down about 3 fold making 20% plus your 1.5% so you have roughly 21.5% proof apple pie.
You could however get a calculator out and be more precise. The point is the proof is calculated from what went in.

Your hydrometer will be useless once you start mixing . Best you can do is use the dilution calculators available here to get an approximation from the mix proportions same as if you were cutting with water .

Re: Proofing apple pie?
I am interested in this apple pie and have never tasted any. I think I saw it in the liquor store when back in states but didn't check it out. Do I understand its supposed to be in the 60 proof range and a sweet drink? Sorry for my stupidity but wish to mix some here in Ecuador but have nothing to use as a sample. I was able to boil some apples with cinnamon, brown sugar, and nutmeg..make a think apple pie like mix and use the liquid mixed with my shine, but it is quite cloudy for weeks, not that I really care as it looks ok for us and tastes pretty good, but would like a better presentation for friends to drink.

Re: Proofing apple pie?
I make mine by using 1/2 gallon of apple juice, 1/2 gallon of apple cider, 1/4 of a whole nutmeg (not ground so I dont have to filter a ton), 2 whole cloves, 1 cup brown sugar, 1 cup white sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Ill bring all that to a boil in a pot then let it cool. I usually just add my alochol to taste thats why I was trying to figure out how to proof it.

Re: Proofing apple pie?
I guess my question is,,,,,,,,,"What do most folks expect it to taste like'? I know what apple taste like, and make a darn good one. I read Twalks recipe here sounds good.
I hear much about it from all back in the states, but have never tasted any. Never knew much about liquor and stuff such as Apple Jack, never tried any of that.
First time I heard of Apple Pie was in that TV show "Justified" when that ole tough woman shared hers with Raylan..
So from what I read the finished product is not clear? And it is sweet like apple pie?
I cooked up some apples like I was making apple pie, with similar ingredients to Twalk, but without Apple Cider. It tasted really good, I took all the syrup off leving apples in the pot. let it sit in fridge a few days, then added it to a gallon jug and added some UJSMM to it. It is pretty good taste , but when I put it on ice was really good. I am not much on ice drinks. Thinkin it will also be tasty hot.
Thanks Twalk for the recipe, Please any other recommendations before i give some to my friends? Thanks in advance

Re: Proofing apple pie?
Here is the recipe I use:
I just put up 2.5 gallons and that was my original recipe but I made the following changes.:
1 gallon apple juice
1 gallon apple cider
1.5 cups white sugar and 2.5 cups brown sugar
2 Liter of 190 proof
8 Cinnamon sticks
In a large stock pot, combine the apple cider, apple juice, sugar, and cinnamon sticks.
Bring it to a boil, then take it off the heat and allow it to cool.
Add the 2 liters of high proof liquor.
Pour this into mason jars, put the lids on, and let it mellow out.
You could drink it right away, but it does get better after a couple of weeks.
Using the calculator on the parent site:
http://homedistiller.org/calcs/dilute" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
By doubling the alcohol volume from the regular recipe of 1 liter to 2 liters and using the calculator it raises my abv to 20% or 40 proof.

Re: Proofing apple pie?
I just made another batch and I think its my best yet. Got a lot of really good comments.
Bring to boil:
1 gallon apple juice
1 gallon apple cider
2 cups brown sugar
2 cups white sugar
1 whole nutmeg (cut into 1/4's)
7 whole cloves
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon almond extract
8 cinnamon sticks
After it cooled I added 5 quarts of 100 proof. plus I put a cinnamon stick in each jar when I let them sit and mellow.

Does it burn on a plate? Does it burn in a spoon? Does an ice cube sink (whooo baby) or float?twalk39 wrote:How do I proof apple pie moonshine? Doesnt the sugar throw off the hydrometer?

Re: Proofing apple pie?
Most Apple pie recipes are so low ABV. They wouldn't burn.
And the sugar content would throw your ice cube off.
