Getting the pickle smell / taste out of pickle jars?
Anyone got a good remedy for getting the pickle smell / taste out of old pickle jars? I have shit loads of 1 gallon pickle jars stored in my basement. My kids go through a gallon of pickles in a bout 2 weeks. I just can't seem to get that smell out of them...

You try any Oxyclean? That stuff does wonders..
Don't just throw it together. Take the time to build it right....

Soap and water - no effect. Then I used baking soda and water - no noticeable affect. Then diluted chlorine bleach - better, but still smelled. Then Oxy-Clean powder - about 3 scoops with enough water to fill the jug. The smell was gone, but it was in there for a long time - couple of weeks. I kind of forgot about it. The lid still smelled a little. I guess because it wasn't in direct contact with the liquid. So, I just filled the lid with the liquid and let it sit overnight and that fixed it. I would suggest using the Oxyclean over night and then flip the jug upside down for another day to take care of the lid.
I was a little surprised at how persistent the smell can be. You wouldn't think glass would hold a smell like that.

Sory don't know why I thought you were talkin pickle buckets.
Glass jars should not retain smells. A good wash and bleach soak. Should take care of anything. The lids will hold smells. But I have a bunch around here. That you would never know held pickles. I store flour, sugar and corn meal, for the kitchen in them. And have at least 6 aging product down stairs. None of which smell like pickles.

Well the glass is easy but you can't use the lids anyway unless you put a new lining in. I use ptfe sheet to make mine.

This place sells PTFE discs and PTFE sheets - http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/item.a ... &catid=720" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow . The two larger ones fit standard and wide-mouth mason jars. I think the pickle jars are larger than 3.5", so you would probably need to cut the liner from a PTFE sheet. I've also used heavy duty aluminum foil as a liner - works pretty well.

So you cant use the original jar lids? They look to be all metal, no plastic...
Re: Getting the pickle smell / taste out of pickle jars?
There is a soft rubber-like lining on the lids, similar to the seal on a canning jar. They will get eaten up by high-test Etoh.

Humm, wonder if there's a replacement u can buy that doesn't contain them...

The seal under the lid isn't the same as a mason jar?
I was hoping to be able to use them for long term storage and aging instead of using a crap load of mason jars.

I believe they are the same material. But, if I have read correctly. Even mason jar lids aren't recommended for very high proof liquors...
Re: Getting the pickle smell / taste out of pickle jars?
Getting the pickle smell out is one thing...getting salsa smell out of a lid is altogether different. I've let a lid soak in oxi-clean for a week and it still smells.
Now that I read I shouldn't use the lids because of the rubber, I'll forget trying to clean them anymore.
