Spring in the South

Post by ga flatwoods »

Here is a pic for those of you less fortunate snow birds. Sign that Spring is upon us. The first azeala bloom I have found this year.

December nearly felt like summer this year. Was a sweaty Christmas morning at my house anyway.

GA, we hit 73 now it's 30 something and the peeper frogs are peeping,50mph winds today. The local news actually reported several little dogs being blown away, for real. That's windy hold on to your chihuahuas. Melloman

It was 80 here today and 63 now at 10:00pm. Maples are in bloom and the swamps will be in full bloom given another week or so. March and April are beautiful down here with all the azaleas in full bloom. Savannah is full of them and make for a nice St. Patrick's Day and the second largest parade in the US.

I'd like to buy a little global warming. We are in the middle of yet another blizzard. I have an 8 foot snow drift outside my game room. I can't see the lake unless I go upstairs. I suppose that's actually a mercy of sorts. If I could actually see the lake I'd be reminded of the fact that the ice is so fricking thick my auger won't go all the way through it, no fishing for me.

Near where I live, Mt. Diablo had a wildfire last fall. Charred quite a bit of it. We finally got some good rain the past month so Saturday my GF and I are taking a cruise out there to see if we can spot some nice wildflowers in bloom.

I'm a sucker for native wildflowers. Especially since they are very drought resistant and don't need a lot of water once established. Important around here were droughts tend to be the rule and not the exception.

OK trip to Mount Diablo yielded some good finds. Blooms aren't in full swing yet but definitely saw:

California Golden Poppy (no brainer, very common)
Western Wallflower
Blue Dicks (look it up... nice flower)
Wild Pansies
Brewer's Rock Cress
Mt. Diablo Lupine
Monkey Flower

And the manzanita is growing shoots from the base of the stems, even though all the rest of the plants are toasted black from the fire. I guess the roots did just fine. Gotta love those native California plants and their hundreds of thousands of years of fire ecology.

That's one beautiful mountain, Jesse. The shellfish fossils around the peak sure amazed me. Used to camp out near the peak for meteor showers in the 60's and have just the peak and Coit Tower sticking out through the fog in the morning.

Very pretty. Thanks for posting Uncle Jesse! The mountain looks out of place with what appears to be the flatlands behind it.

Yes it's very tall and to the east is the central valley. That pic looks toward Stockton just a bit south of Sacramento. You can see the delta in the photo.

It's the geographical "center" of California on aviation maps due to the way it stands out. And even though it's near a lot of population, it's pretty remote. I could hear some guys having fun with their guns not too far off while we were up there.

Lots of history to the mountain. One of the members of the infamous Donner Party settled at the base of the mountain because the grizzly hunting was so good!

After the flowers drop the petals, the poppies out out these long, pointy seed pods. Grab them when they are almost all the way brown but be careful. They split at the top when they are dry and pop open which spreads the seeds around for a yard or so in all directions. I've picked them before and had them pop open in my hand and lost most of the seeds!
