Element Heat Density - Too High?

Post by BigJay00 »

Just wondering if this has ever caused issues for anyone. I was running a 5500w Camco ultra-low watt density element until it practically exploded in my boiler (read: element burn out IS a real thing). I had an extra Camco 5500w element that I bought at Home Depot. It's not ULWD, and when I turn it on full power at the beginning of a run, it makes a horribly loud hissing. Will this in any way cause damage to the element or wash? (Assuming the wash has been cleared of solids). I'm thinking of getting another ULWD element anyways, just curious of everyone's take on this.

Thanks!

Hissing? My elements make all kinds of noises. Clanks clunks hums pings and pops. Never heard a hissing?

It should ne fine. As long as its covered with liquid? Only time I've seen one burn out is if it wasn't covered. Not saying it couldn't happen.

I think the hissing is the liquid around the element coming to a boil almost instantaneously. Interesting that yours doesn't make that noise.

Maybe hissing isn't quite the right way to describe it? It's not really high pitched, just loud. Like a loud "ssshhhh"? :?

My boiler sounds like a small turbine when I first fire it up at full power... more of a roar than a hiss. The first run it really had me worried but now I'd be worried if it was too quiet.

Mine hisses really loud at first as stated its just the liquid around the element warming. When the still is almost up to temp its almost silent/no hissing that's when I turn the water on for the Liebig.

I do know mine goes almost quite. Right before it boils. It's a good indicator.

Sometimes you gotta just listen to your still instead of staring at a thermometer. Kinda like that weird sound in the car the wife asks about but you know exactly what it is you gotta know your rig :ewink:
