heating element choice advice

Post by Full_moon »

Hi

I am making a 8gal cm/pot still based on the Mh design. I have 110 and 220 available. I am going to install a 110v heating element to use with my current 110 V controller., or I can install a 220V and make/ purchase a new 220 V controller.
My current set up I can bring to producing in 45min to1h,1omin. 4 to 4.5 gal wash depending on temp. with a broilking hot plate under my 5gal potstill. I would think an internal heating element would be more efficient.
Would the upgrade to 220 V. be the thing to do? I would be using the MH 8 gal boiler, MH extension with built in reflux, my own construction of vapor cone and liebig.

MH stills are cm stills. Not VM?

I would bite the bullet. And go with the 220v element. A 4500 watt ultra low wavy type. Would be good for that boiler. Or a 5500w ultra low if it will fit.

Heat up times will be a lot shorter.

And you will need the more watts to run the reflux. At its best. A 2" reflux needs between 2000 and 2400 wattage to run optimal. You won't get that from a 120v element. Unless you use two. And I would still recommend two 5500w 220 elements ran on two separate 120v circuits. Over 120v elements.
