Producer's Pride Cracked Corn vs. Other
I wanted to run this by the members that are using Producer's Pride Cracked Corn.
Have any of you noticed a reduction in starch yield compared to any other corn?
I decided to give the Producer's Pride a try this year because it's half the price of what I've been using. I just finished up the first 50lb bag, and there's a noticeable decrease in my SGs across every recipe.
I'm currently making some Booner's and Jimbo's Wheated Bourbon.
At 2lb/gal on the Booner's, my old SG was 1.050-1.052. Now, I'm lucky to see 1.043-1.045. Same with Jimbo's recipe.
The crack size is about the same as what I used to have, pH is within range, conversion to sugar is good and everything ferments out dry (.998).
I know it's only a 1% ABV decrease, but that comes out to a 13.5% reduction in yield compared to last year.
Anybody else seeing this?

I have glanced at it at our local supply.
If I remember right the tag reflects a lower percentage analysis than most others. Somewhere in the mid six range?

My old bags didn't have a tag to compare. I was buying from a local feed store that cracked their own corn.

I doubt you'll get an answer from woodshed. He suffered a stroke day before yesterday.rager wrote:can you clear this up for me? what exactly are you looking for on the tag?woodshed wrote:I have glanced at it at our local supply.

On the bag of corn, there's a tag that lists nutritional information. The mid six he's referencing is the crude protein content.
When I first opened the new bags, there was a strong smell of vinegar to the grains so I started looking for something to reference that. After doing a little more reading, I came across a thread about propionic acid in the Producer's Pride corn bags. My most recent experiences were similar to Jimbo's where I was having ferments get stuck at the tail end, too. After following corene's suggestion of washing the corn before mashing, I've been able to get my OGs back on target. The yeasts on the first 2 have already taken off, so I'll see shortly if washing the corn made a difference.

Re: Producer's Pride Cracked Corn vs. Other
I received a bag of this for Christmas.
It was very clean and fresh. I'll be using more of it in the future.

Re: Producer's Pride Cracked Corn vs. Other
I'm looking for another source of corn after this last bag is done.
Way too much work and way too inconsistent. I paid more for the old stuff, but my extraction was better and I didn't have to wash the hell out of it.

Re: Producer's Pride Cracked Corn vs. Other
I just ran a batch of rolled corn and honey. 55 gal worked off real fast,no stall. I like the rolled corn better than cracked now that i used it. Producers is all we have here in town, but I ran some from a bulk feed plant last summer and my results are the same. Rolled converts faster when boiling, but dont do too much at a time . Easy to scorch. Good luck-------mike

I use a product called "blue seal" fine cracked corn. I looked at the tag and it said it had a minimum of 8% protein . not sure if that's good or not. either case been working well for me. 16 and change for a 50# bag at a local hardware store.

Yea, I dumped the Producer's Pride junk.
I found a new feed store that had Grainland Select. Much cleaner corn, better crack and it doesn't have that vinegar smell to the bag. It costs a few dollars more, but my mash efficiency went up 20% so I'm using less corn.

I have used it more than a few times and is fine for the UJ. What are you saying by "much cleaner corn" are you saying that you fine none corn matter in yours? I found the crack to be equal to others and they had a fine grind that was perfect for a UJ. My Tractor Supply and all the stores in my area have stopped stocking the fine grind corn and the all grain sweet COB too. If it is still availible to me I will use it.BayouShine wrote:Yea, I dumped the Producer's Pride junk.

While I was washing the stink out of the Producer's Pride, I noticed some cob and husk mixed in. After washing the Grainland Select, there was hardly any other stuff.acfixer69 wrote:I have used it more than a few times and is fine for the UJ. The crack is close, but if you're using the PP for UJSSM I doubt any of this will matter. Once you try to use it for all grain though, there's a big difference.

All I have used is producers pride, works great for UJSSM. Yes, there is a fair amount of cob mixed in that I screen off.
I have done several runs of AG and have had poor results compared to others (1.04 typically). I thought I was doing something wrong- several recipes, malts, and enzymes with the same result. I will look for a different brand now to compare.

That's exactly my experience.Soft batch wrote: I have done several runs of AG and have had poor results compared to others (1.04 typically). I thought I was doing something wrong- several recipes, malts, and enzymes with the same result. I will look for a different brand now to compare.
It's frustrating to gelatinize corn for 3+hrs and not have anything to show for it. It got to the point that I was breaking my arm trying to stir this crap, so I built an automatic stirrer. At 3lbs/gal, I was only getting 1.05 for an SG.
After switching from the PP, I'm getting 1.055-1.058 from only 2lbs/gal. That's a big difference.

Re: Producer's Pride Cracked Corn vs. Other
The Producer's Pride is also notorious for having propionic acid added as a preservative. I don't know if it has any affect on conversion, but it can affect fermentation. Some folks here have talked about rinsing it in cool clear water to remove the acid. During the process of rinsing, I would assume that most of the husk and stalk material would float to the surface and could also be removed. But, as others have said, it's probably worth looking for a better option. The label on the bag can tell you a lot about what you're buying.
