The senate bill was S.1562... you can find out more about the movement here: http://www.hobbydistillersassociation.org/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow and while you're there consider becoming a member for this worthy cause!
Do I get a sticker to put on my car like with the NRA?
Do you want to put a sticker that identifies you as a home distiller on your car?

I just signed up, 5 years, use those funds and get this thing passed this year if at all possible!

Are there any plans for 2017? I don't see any news on that on the HDA website? What's the lobbyist's assessment? How's the new administration likely to affect chances for the near term? Since its been tied to the other bill, can it also be tied to some piece of must pass legislation? Is that possible? Pork for hobby distillers everywhere.

We are pushing to get included on upcoming tax legislation, but it will greatly depend on financial support. Having covered most of the HDA's cost for the past 2.5 years, I have to pull back and at least see a reasonable portion paid by membership fees and donations. If we can keep the fight moving, then I think that we have a strong chance of getting it done this year.

Howdy,
As I said previously, the 2 bills in the 114th Congress died when Congress went home for the holidays. They will have to be re-introduced in the 115th Congress. We had more than 68% of the House cosponsor HR 2903 and 51% of the Senate cosponsor S 1562. We hoped to get them voted on before the break but it did not happen - the word was the Congress (now in GOP control) didn't want to waste time before Christmas with legislation that they could get in early 2017.

The HDA is working through our lobbyist to find out what is going on in Congress to get what we started reintroduced. Because of its overall support in Congress, our support in Senate Finance, the TTB and others, we are optimistic that good things will happen soon. All you hear about now is the health care laws. There are several Senators who are very much in favor of seeing this home distilling legalized. There are still a lot of "ifs", but that is the nature of our Congress. When they finish playing to the constituents who voted for them, they hopefully will get down to the business at hand - we need to get past January 20th first. Paul Ryan made it clear in early December that no tax related bills would be dealt with until after the first of the year. They will get around to them - we just hope sooner than later.

The HDA bumper sticker might be a fun idea. There is no sense hiding the fact that you are pro hobby distilling. Lets face it, very few people will now what it is and if they ask you can tell them. We are by no means still in the closet. This is now a very open issue thanks to the HDA. We ask that everyone reading this post contact their Representatives and ask for their support. To see who actually supported the bills last year go to GovTrack.us. All of the House and Senate representatives who were cosponsors are listed on this site. If your guy(s) are on the list, by all means remind him/her that you voted for them and you need their support in this matter to get it reintroduced and voted on.

The sequester killed the TTB's manpower. They are hiring skilled employees now to approve bottle labels and recipes for alcohol. There have been no more raids like the ones in Florida a couple of years ago. The Administrator of the TTB (John Manfreda) told me he liked my posts so I have to be careful that I don't inadvertently say something he would not like. He told all of us that he was not happy that people were applying for AFPs (alcohol fuel plants) solely for the purpose of hiding a still designed to make drinkable alcohol. I do believe that he would love to have home distilling enforcement off his plate so he could concentrate on other matters.

One more idea. When the new bills get introduced ( and we will let you know as soon as it happens), call or email, text you friends and family in other states and ask them to help our cause by emailing their Reps and Senators. I call this the "Phone a Friend" plan that came from the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire gameshow on TV several years ago.

How much is it worth to you and your friends who would like to distill your own alcohol in the comfort of your home without having to worry about breaking the law?? We need your support and all the other supporters you can send to the HDA. Thanks again for reading

Tom,
Great post and great info! Been a proud supporter for a few years now and truly appreciate the effort of the HDA. I think the next big hurdle following federal legislature will be subsequent state approval. I am wondering if the HDA will be able to assist there as well and I suspect they will

Thanks again!

Absolutely. That has been the plan all along. Rick has already started a state by state look at which ones will be simple and which ones will need more work. We won't need the lobbyist for the state stuff, but we will need help from distillers out there to get the message to their various legislative folks. We expect some states to fight it harder than others. It has already been 3 years since we started - time goes by fast when you are having fun.

Again, thanks so much for all your effort and time Tom. Can't wait until this is done and you guys set your sights on Canada! If they want to legalize pot here, distilling would be considered a no brainer.

Anyway, good luck and hope to see it passed soon!

Great news (literally!). A reporter at the ABC affiliate in Detroit (WXYZ) has finished a story on hobby distilling, and it is airing tonight on the 11 o'clock news. Here is a link to the commercial and teaser- http://www.wxyz.com/news/thursday-at-11 ... is-booming" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow. They stream their news at http://www.wxyz.com/video/watch-newscasts-live" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow, so feel free to watch it!

The teaser and write up already look like its gonna be yet another sensationalized piece of media horseshit. 'face jailtime' 'felony', interview with a fireman (the implication is clear).

But Ill keep an open mind and hope for the best.

I am hopeful that this is different. The story started because the reporter was interested in making her own whisky for fun. When she found out that it was illegal she was upset, and started digging into why. As part of that, she contacted us, and decided to do a story on it.

How this turns out, I don't know. That we will have to wait to see.

Yeah pretty good job.

Bet that fireman doesn't even know that ethanol is 100% infinitely miscible with water,,,,or even what I just said.

Also betcha that he has put out more than one Thanksgiving day deep fat fried turkey fire in somebody's back yard,,,,,and could not use water as the extinguishing agent.......

Hot damn I am pleasantly surprised. Her message throughout was that it is safer now than before and the technology and knowledge has really evolved. Excellent!

The only squirrely part was the whole methanol bit. I guess she's not aware the methanol issue during prohibition was the feds that intentionally poisoned illicit spirits, murdering hundreds of people in the process.

News organizations are hungry for things to write about and film. If the hobby distillers organization could write a brief outline, collect examples like this video (with corrective commentary to avoid repeating errors), and connect news organizations to local distillers willing to go on camera, I'll bet you could generate hundreds of news events like this one or better.

I didn't know that either until recently Jimbo...

The spot was really great.... a real positive spin for home distilling, downplaying the dangers and accent the changes. I would love to see something this positive on every local news outlet. I wonder if there is a way to point local news to this vid...?

There will always be alcohol and the successful/positive outcomes from home beer and wine should be the spring board for this hobby as well. We are seeing more and more members every month and if its this popular in the underground.... the mainstream should not be far away.

I hope...

It parallels the microwbrew revolution of the early 1990's and the "412" proliferation in the past 5 years; build in the hobby business (public interest), adjust paradigms (media support), lobby the lawmakers, and process legal amendments. Next, capitalize on the industry through tax support and regulate the growth and safety with certifications and licenses.

"We the people" win! And remember, our legislators enjoy a well produced product too. There's homebrewers, winemakers, and (closet) distillers there too!

Based on what I've seen with elite media, they would film you, smile, shake your hand, and present you to be exactly what is wrong with society. You would be the next Phil Robertson. I wouldn't trust a media personality further than i could throw them.

Anyway, while a favorable media campaign would be nice, we have numbers. Those drive the day. Keep accumulating co sponsors.
