Hello from South Western Ontario

Post by Duncan W »

Hello from South Western Ontario.

Extreme newb here to the craft of alcohol distillation. As this is illegal in my parts and am unaware of anyone running a still let alone seen one in operation, this site/forum and its contributors will be critical to my understanding of the hobby. I am amazed and overwhelmed at the amount of information available on this forum and it’s parent site. Theories, materials, hardware, ingredients and safety... so much to learn! My goal is to discretely produce whiskey in a safe, efficient manner for myself, friends and family. So, pot still it appears to be. (propane turkey fryer, keg, 2” copper pipe, liebig) First stop... A little spoon feeding for new and novice distillers.

Cheers,
Duncan

Welcome Duncan! I'm in Toronto and run pretty close to the setup you're mentioning. Keg pot still with 2" column. I use a Bayou propane burner to heat it. One of the first things is to figure out where to buy grains inexpensively to do a mash. If you're not far from a TSC then you're set.

Thanks for sharing Speedfreaksteve.

Yes, there are plenty of TSC stores in my area! The discussions on mash are surprisingly extensive and detailed here. Currently reading up on UJSSM at the moment. The Bayou propane is mentioned a few times on various websites but have not seen it locally. Do you have any thoughts on this Master Chef model from Canadian Tire? Claims to be 60,000 BTU... http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/maste ... p.html#srp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
Also, sourcing 2" (and greater) pipe and fittings is a challenge, hoping to do cash deals and stay offline. Any thoughts on locations in SWO? I am about an hour west of Toronto. Gooooo Leafs!

Forgive me if these questions should be asked in there appropriate post categories.

Thanks again,
Duncan

One hour west of TO is in Kitchener area.. check with plumbing wholesalers in the area, ask if they sell to jobbers, that's how I get the items from wholesalers in my area.. and most wholesalers will sell to the public, they just don't like doing a cash transaction..

Hey Duncan,
I use that exact propane burner from Canadian tire and have done so for the last few years. No complaints with it at all. It has all the power you need and then some. Once things come to a boil you don't need much of a flame to keep it going.

I got most of my stuff online, usually Amazon. I was having trouble sourcing 2" copper too and was turning into a hassle so I just bought a 2" pot still head and leibig with flange and triclamp off ebay. It's decent enough and I'll upgrade the leibig to a bigger one in the spring.

I don't know if that MasterChef burner is big enough for a keg, that would be my only concern.

If I were you I would start with corn from TSC and start with that recipe.

I've got the exact one. It will work for a kegbut it's not the fastest. It's what I started in. If you are comitted to propane as a fuel source get a 55 gallon metal barrel and create an oven jacket. You'll reduce heat up times by a third. And get an extra third of uae out of a bottle of props e. Also always have a spare full tank. You will eventually run out on a run and it's much easier to quickly swap tanks and finish the run.

I guess I should have added that I don't run a keg but use a 14 gallon/52 liter stainless stock pot. The Masterchef burner works really well for my set up.

+1 on always having a spare tank of propane around as you will run out at some point and need to do a quick swap.

I actually got both my tanks off Craigslist/Kijiji. One was full for $25, the other was half ful for $30. I refill them at Costco or TSC usually for $12, or CDN tire in a pinch for $16 or something like that.
