Looks like he is using pretty standard modern equipment

Re: A very pretty idea for a dephlegmator
Been thinking about this design . It isn’t new thats for sure . There are quite a few stills on here that have a similar coil wrapped around the outside as Deflags .
EG It is a modification of a jacketed condenser. And a jacked condenser really is a concentric condenser .
But using a coil is more efficient because you can force the Coolant to create a more even temp gradient in a counter flow arrangement .
Here is another pic I stole from an old topic . In this case the builder added a spiral wire to create the same effect . OK , it was used as an RC not a Deflag , but the question is how efficient is a condenser of this design at knocking down power in full reflux ?
viewtopic.php?p=7410158#p7410158
If you read , they say it was good for 1200w .
Now that may not be the best deflag design in the land , but at that power , its probably more than adequate of handling a spirit run on 5-8gal run .

My recommended goto .

My view is not great.. why.. to much open space between the spirals thereby lost of cooling effect..
Whereas the true water jacket condenser has water low that in touch with the whole inner wall of the condenser, providing more cooling effect..
But this is not what this thread is about.. the title refer to a dephlegmator not a water cool jacket.. all this does is diluting the meaning of a dephlegmator.. put the video shows it's being used on a pot still setup, not a reflux column..

Re: A very pretty idea for a dephlegmator
i had six inches of 1/4" coiled on a 2" column. it refluxed a bit. compressed tails a bit. with copper mesh packing to distribute the transfer area it worked way better, could hold back enough to compress heads a bit too.
wouldn't do the whole job, no way making voddy in one pass..or even two, but it was a nice complication to have on a basic still and i enjoyed using it.
imho, i'd like to see a deflag do 100%, but even the one i have now (shotty design) won't do that. i can only get to 190 proof before it reaches it's limit.

Re: A very pretty idea for a dephlegmator
Come to the house I'll show you one.. complete stoppage of the vapors with the ability to control it a 1 drop per 3 - 4 sec..
Now that's a much different setup than what has been promoted.. with packing like ss scrubbies in the area of the coils, yes there some refluxing generated, but it's still not a reflux column condenser..

Re: A very pretty idea for a dephlegmator
Just guessing.
If the coils are soldered to the tube, it's as good as a water jacket.

Here's a modification I did a while back to make a 2" concentric dephleg better.
I drilled holes in the vapor tube and soldered short pieces of wire for the vapor to condense on and act as a guide so the reflux fell on the center of the packing.

Thats what I was thinking Shady . Flattened coils soldered would be a lot of heat transfer …….effectively a coiled water jacket .
My recommended goto .

Copper conducts heat really good.
The way I see it.
A 2" column is almost too small for a shot-gun or an internal coil needed for a dimroth dephleg.
That's the reason why a jacket and/or a cold finger is an option.

I see a coil of copper.. Where's the condenser ? ? Further more what's it to do with this thread..

it's a twisted pair if you actually look, it is the same idea as the OP's pic , thanksStillerBoy wrote: ↑Tue Jan 24, 2023 6:21 amI see a coil of copper.. Where's the condenser ? ? Further more what's it to do with this thread..

Take a condenser like this and coil it up.

Re: A very pretty idea for a dephlegmator
Then if it's a "twisted pair", why can I see through it.. all there is a 1/2" reduced to a 3/8"..
it's still a pot still setup with coil copper in hope of cooling the distillate.. yeah it's run slow enough..
But the thread is about a "dephlegmator.. everyone is all over the map..
