What do they use to clear coat liquor bottles?

Little or nothing to do with distillation.

What do they use to clear coat liquor bottles?

Post by Steve Broady »

I have a tequila bottle with a really interesting shape, sort of reminiscent of a wooden carving mallet(of course I can’t remember the brand, having already removed the labels). As I was scraping the labels off today, I thought for a minute that I’d scratched the glass, which surprised me. Upon closer examination, it appears that the glass has a clear coating on it, probably to give it the look of blue green glass. I tried paint thinner and lacquer thinner, neither of which touched the stuff at all.

The glass itself is clear, which I like. Obviously, I can scrape the coating off, but that’s going to be a lot of work given the shape of the bottle. The coating is clearly not soluble in acetone, and presumably not in alcohol. Before I start throwing every solvent I can think of at this stuff and seeing what happens, I figured I’d ask here. Does anyone know what kind of clear coat is commonly used in the industry, if there even is a standard? Obviously, you can’t tell me about my bottle specifically since you don’t know what it is, but I’m hoping someone might be able to say “Oh yeah, they pretty much all use Product XYZ when they coat bottles.” Failing that, I’ll just do some experimenting.

It may be a baked on glaze type thing. Try sanding a spot lightly on bottom and scuff the coating and then try solvent see if it comes up then.

Try oven cleaner. That will probably loosen it if it's not a baked on glaze. If that don't work, try Turco aircraft paint stripper but be cautious with it. That shit is cuastic and will cause serious chemical burns on bare skin. (The waste is also hazardous and should be properly disposed of)

I had a feeling you’d know the bottle! And yeah, it definitely feels baked on, or otherwise tougher than just paint. If I can’t get it off, no big deal. But it would be interesting to try.

If you have acetone, lay the bottle on it's side fold up 3 squares of toilet paper for 3 layers

dribble acetone to the point of saturation, and leave for a couple hours and see if it softens.

This is always my next step after water doesn't work.

After that a heat gun but breakage is a risk.

It could be a uv cured paint. They are pretty durable but you can scratch them.
