pros and cons of filtering your mash

Post by Pepper0715 »

ITS RUNNNNN DAY.
i got 12g's of apple that hit 1.000 this morning

its 15 lb of apples, 10 gallons of AJ, 15lb brown suger =.09 gravity. i feel like

since i got this essential oil maker last month

i have alot of 1 & 5 micron water filter fabric on hand, that i use as a filter for cleaning up the final results.

do you think i would lose any vast amount apple character/flavor, if i strained thru my fine mesh as normal, then strained again thru the 1 or 5 micron filter fabric before running? i have ran juices (not mash) thru this cloth and drank it, as a test, i lost some color but no flaver.

me and the wife are on different sides of the fence on this one. her Palate is amazing. she can id almost every indgredent used in a pie for example including the type of suger used ITS CRAZY. me however, all i taste is the fruit and maybe one spice MAYBE!!! in the same pie.

IMO if the mash is ran thru a 1 micron filter sock/pad, there would be nothing but liquid in the pot, so the chances of sorching would be 0.? i have not sorched anything yet, knock on wood.

she says i need the litte bitsy bits for flavor.. her words    she also wants me to hang a bag of apples in the top of my 3" dia column. above my copper mesh..

Personally I wouldn't be putting anything in the column that would heat up and collapse.

Be careful about putting anything in your vapor path.

My experience with stripping out an apple juice ferment (no sugar or fruit pieces added) was that it puked on me three or four times. Granted, I probably overfilled my boiler, but a normal heat up cycle was too much & it puked. Alot.

If I do another apple juice only ferment, I’ll fill the copper pot only halfway, do a very slow heat up (propane) on both the strip & spirit runs, and wouldn’t put anything in the vapor path.
🎱 The struggle is real and this rabbit hole just got interesting.

so we decide not put any bag in the column. I packed it with 1 roll of copper mesh on top of my mesh column screen and placed apple chuncks on top of the copper mesh. this process is another first for me.

hope It don't puke. it's low and slow and going to be a long but fun day.

whats the rule of thumb to prevent puking.. like xx gallon pot should hold no more than xx gallons?

Pepper what happens when the apple chunks soften.... they could potentially block the vapour path of the still....... and then...

My general rule is a bit over 3/4 full with nothing that could potentially soften, break down and then be carried up the vapor path in a spew, then lodging in my PC and making my still explode and covering all my family with boiling liquid.

Sorry if that seems a bit harsh, but consequences

Read through this thread for making a geist:

Fruit is placed in a column under packing / reflux - or pot-stilled.

I did this fairly recently with grape pomace as my "packing" with some reflux. Here->

If you were concerned about the level of apple flavor in the finished product, not adding sugar would have helped and would be safer than putting chunks of raw apple in the riser.

Is there a reason why you can't put them in the boiler or thumper?
