Badmotivator - We will miss you!

Post by Jes2xu »

I'm very sad to say that Ben AKA Badmotivator was involved in a paragliding accident and passed away a few days ago.

Many of us were inspired by Ben in a lot of different ways. His lust for life and passion for curiosity were infectious. I know for a fact I am one of many that he helped in a lot of different ways. We will miss you mate.

I'm not 100% sure how things will play out with his company ( badmotivator barrels). But the plan is for his legacy to continue. Please be patient while the giant void left by Ben is filled.

Im, sure there are many here that will continue to make DIY barrels after being inspired by Ben. What better way to remember an amazing person?

Mods, if this isn't the right place for this or it should be moved etc please do what you think is best.

Incredibly tragic. I was holding one of the barrels I bought from him just this morning.

You could tell he was so proud to give back to this hobby and what he created. He undercharged for his barrels, he told us how to make them, it wasn’t about the money.

I’m a nobody home distiller but I do have 2 Badmo barrels. I’m going to be thinking about ways to honor Ben’s legacy.

Jesse- not sure if you’re in touch with the family or if there’s a cause we can donate to in Ben’s honor but if you know anything I’d be grateful if you posted info here.

Absolutely tragic. Ben was a hero for the community. A truly wonderful person has been lost and will be missed.

I will cherish my 4 barrels from him and the process he shared with all of us to make more.
I just read an article about the dangers of drinking that scared the crap out of me.

That’s it. No more reading!

Damn that was hard to read! So sad but speaking as an ex paraglider pilot I know that he died doing something he loved. Rest in peace Ben.

I just watched your video. Thanks for getting the word out although it is tough news to hear. He was such a great guy. Very passionate about his craft and compassionate about us. He will be missed.

What a tragedy, my condolences to his family and friends. His ripple was felt by many more people then he might have even been aware. Very creative, and inspiring man, admired from a far by many. R.I.P.

Holy shit... he was just at the shop 2 weeks ago dropping off his first batch of barrels for retail. This is devastating.

Rest in peace Ben :(

How tragic.
I was really hoping to meet him at the PNW meet up next month. We will definitely raise a glass in his honor.

I just tried my first whiskey I aged in a barrel I made from some help from him the other day. Hadn’t gotten around to emailing him pictures and an update. The little contact I had with him, he seemed like a great guy.

Ben was such a stand up guy. I tried a dozen times to get a barrel and I posted my frustration here on the site. I got a message from Ben that reads as follows:
"Hey there. I really would like you to have a chance to try these barrels
out. Can I send you one as a sort of apology for your frustrating
experience? No need to make a public thing out of this, but I really do
feel badly and appreciate your feedback. And frankly I'd rather make a
friend than a dollar.

If you'll accept, just send me your address and I'll send one out to you.
Which toast and char were you hoping for?

Cheers,

Ben"

Wow! That blew me away. Such a passionate fellow. I did give him my address and he sent me a barrel. I contacted him 2 or 3 times about payment and he turned me down each time. He will be missed for sure.

A brother from another mother. You just knew he enjoyed waking up every morning. May his family find peace in knowing he touched many people and will be remembered...

Damn BadMotivator. RIP Brother.
My thoughts and prayers go out to your family.

A friend and I tripped downstairs and I pulled out a Badmo barrel with UJSSM and some flaked rye as a toast to Ben. It was only 6 mo. old but was sweet and flavorful. Cheers to you Ben and prayers to your family and friends that have lost a treasure.

You can tell what kind of a person Ben must have been from this. The world would be a better place with more Bens in it. Very sad, I hope we can learn something from his attitude and approach to life. RIP Ben.

A sad day for sure. I was lucky enough to get a BadMo barrel this last round. Right as I was about to fill it....I found out of Ben's passing. I filled it in his honor.

He was a master innovator indeed. I watched the video tour of his workshop. A lot of time and thought went into making his life just a little bit easier and more efficient. And generous to a fault with his knowledge. I couldn't justify the shipping cost of a barrel, or the cost of buying multiple ones. And one day I'll probably end up making some, but he's one of two innovative people I've encountered who intuitively understood that those who wanted to just buy one, would, and those who wanted to try and build one probably would too, so rather than hold back your secrets, best to provide a little help.

Here's to you Ben, and your legacy of making the world (and some spirits) just a little bit better.
