Dephlegmator Designs

Long time reader, first time poster.
I tried using the search function and went thru a lot of post, threads, comments etc. And really was only able to come across tubing size for a dephlegmator. I’m good on that aspect. And I’m probably answering my own question with the previous sentence. In fact most threads are in regards to “shotgun” style.

I’m looking to see if anyone has used a dephlegmator like the one Samohon posted in the Diagrams and Plans thread (it’s like a liebig design) but also have used the “shotgun” style. If so, which style did you find more efficient and controllable for your setup?

Just so we are all on the same page, by Deflagameter you are referring to a reflux condensor?
It's a very broad question that has hundreds of answers based on hundreds of variables.
What type of column are you planning on building? What size? A bit more info will make it easier for people to answer your questions

The shotgun is probably the most commonly used dephleg.

Here's a couple 4" dimroth dephlegs.
They slide in and clamp on top of the column, the union connects to the condenser.

The liebig idea is a shit design, I wouldn't even classify it as a deflegmator.
We see how well that type works on a regular basis when people buy those so called "multi purpose " CM stills.
When you have something that in reality is not much more that a jacketed column, with one large diameter hole up the guts of it, then you also have to wonder how well it will separate the different components of the wash being distilled at the time.

Olddog figured it out.
Based on knockdown power, the liebig style has to be taller than all the other options.
That means there's less height left for column.

They even mislabeled the CM as a VM.

Well Mike was always looking to do something new to design for one thing. He enjoyed the design and build process more than anything.

I think he ditched the more open style of the single tube & shell because he realized that he wasn't able to produce quite as much reflux. And therefore his abv was lagging a bit compared to some other builders in the community that were also contributing and participating in the daily discussions.

At the time (and perhaps still today) some folks ( including myself) were putting entirely too much emphasis on acheiving maximum abv. Though, in retrospect I believe it was necessary to over emphasize the importance of abv to gain more knowledge about operating range in general.

Now-a-days I feel folks like Yummy , SB, Shady and a few others do a good job of getting the new folks up to speed way faster now because the info has been throughly vetted compared to some of the fueding that erupted in the early days over some of the theory discussions. OD and Joe Rednose being the the most notable squabbling that comes to mind on the theory discussions.

I believe PrairePiss built a similar condenser Shady.
Another product condenser that I thought I covered in the condenser forum but could not find it. I must have it on a card reader. Spent an hour looking. It is a triple walled Liebig, both Myles and Punkin built one. Maybe LWSC has a link to the condenser?

A cold finger works for smaller columns, it also drips the reflux on the center of the packing.
