First Whiskey

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.
Pics are VERY welcome, we drool over pretty copper 8)

First Whiskey

Post by Maddogbrewing »

Finished my first single malt whiskey. Started with 35lbs of pale malt mashed at 150f
50L total fermented with bakers yeast, did two 25L stripping runs and did my spirt run today had around 8.5L 25abv of low wines.
Did the spirt run in small jars, and made the heads and tails cuts. Still not sure about the heads cut I made still lots to learn.
Ended up 2.5L of spirt aging with oak.
Next time I’ll do a 75L-100L batch.

Nice one mad dog. Low yield, tight cuts, feels like you’re going for quality not quantity.
Now ya just have to have a bit of patience before sampling :D I’ll take a bet that it’s one of the most satisfying things you’ll ever do though.

Have fun and stay safe.

Now that’s where I keep failing! That and the ‘plan ahead’ part.

It’s already smelling pretty good.
I have another mash on the go now:
40lb - 2row
2.5lb - Oats
1lb - crystal 60
Going to use bakers yeast again.
