Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?
I was in Oregon over the long weekend and stumbled across what I thought was a deal on 3.5 gallon buckets of Molasses at a feed store. I got 4 buckets at $21 each. Best deal I could find locally was nearly double that and it had to be ordered.

I was going to put Lithium batteries on my boat. My boat takes. 6 batteries (4 house, one engine, and one thruster). I spent $3000 for AGM batteries and was told the lithium would be double. Great score!

Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?
Batteries are expensive! I just replaced the two 9-year-old 6V AGM deep cycle batteries (225Ah total) in my 5th wheel with a single 280Ah Lithium battery. The Lithium battery was $10 cheaper (on sale) than sticking with AGM and weighs less than one of the 6V AGM batteries. By the time you're ready for new batteries again, lithium will be cheaper than Lead.
Next month, I plan to buy a 2nd battery, and I'll likely never have to run my generator on a boondocking trip unless I want to run the AC.

Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?
Today I stopped at a family run estate sale an hour before they were through and got this 6.5 gallon carboy for $3
I also got 6 vintage fishing rods, (2 Halibut rods, 2 heavy salmon rods, a smaller "trout" rod and a fly rod) and 2 extra reels for $50 I figured since I was willing to pay as much as $18 for the carboy I could splurge on the fishing rods.
I looked up the reels and they sell for $20-30 each and the box sells for $15 by itself so I think that's a bargain. One of the boxes even has the original tools. I haven't looked up the rods but overall I'm happy
Edit: I just looked up some of the rods. A couple of them sell for $20-30 but one has sold several times for $65-75 so I guess I did pretty good
I'm not positive if it was used as a terrerium or a mouse made a home out of it but it will certainly get a thorough cleaning before it's put away.

Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?
I got this Breville juicer for free the other day
I'm thinking about seeing how well it works for apple juice and possibly grape juice. One of the guys I work with said when is grapes are ripe he'll give me as many as I can provide buckets for. I told him I have a lot of buckets, he said that's OK, hell just give them to his daughter and put her to work Should I feel guilty about that?

Yesterday someone brought me 5 buckets of my favorite kind of grapes
Granted, since they aren't completely full it probably only comes to 4 buckets but you know that old saying "Never sniff a gift fish"
Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?
Finally found somewhere I can get molasses in decent volume, for a decent price to make my rums!
I've been paying £11-14 per gallon (Actually 5L as it's UK measures) for horse feed molasses, which soon gets a bit pricey on a big batch.
Well, I dropped onto a place out in the country that I drive (Sort of) past maybe once a month for work and found a gem!
They sell 25L drums of molasses with a higher sugar content than I've been able to get, for £30!
Picked up 2, and told the warehouse guy it was for fishing bait, he said "This any good to you then?" And gave me a sack of oats and a sack of wheat with taped up holes in them!
He's getting a bottle on my next visit!

Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?
I picked up these 3 decanters and this bell shaped silver plate cocktail shaker at a local online estate auction for $16.
They were in a big pile of pretty much worthless bar stuff but when I went to pick everything up the lady running the estate sale brought me to the pile and said "here it is" I took one look and asked "Where are the decanters? because that's the only think I bought the lot for."
Yep, all 3 decanters and the shaker were missing
She quickly went into the kitchen and started looking through some boxes a lady was busy packing and found them and nicely explained to the lady that she had accidentally taken my decanters while packing up the lot she had bought that was next to my lot
The lady was very apologetic but I have to wonder if she did it intentionally, possibly thinking since it was the last half hour before pickup closed that maybe I wasn't going to show up.
I prefer to think it was an honest mistake, but I still wonder. The Decanters Have Coaleport labels that sell for more than I paid for the whole lot and the decanters are very good quality.
The footed etched one is likely from the elegant period, 1920's into the late 30's. The Cut decanter is a nice heavy lead crystal from the American brilliant period, which ran from the late 1870's to around World War 1. The Ewer decanter is another heavy lead crystal but not brilliant period. It's possibly a much later piece than the others but I'm thinking it lands in the middle between the Brilliant cut and the elegant period. Some day I'll check it with a black light but knowing glass I'd be shocked if it didn't glow brilliant white like a good pre WW2 lead crystal should.
The shaker was a bit of a surprise because I was going off some rather poorly taken pictures and no description when I bid on the lot. Because everything else was glass Mrs. Cranky and I thought the shaker was actually probably a Mercury glass decanter. It was surprising to discover it's silver plate and comes apart. What was more surprising was finding one identical to it listed for sale for over $1,500 another one is currently listed on Ebay for $900 I personally don't think that is a realistic price for it but I still need to do some research on that. It is also from the 1930's

Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?
Thank you
It's nice to hit an unexpected home run once in a while.
Doing a bit more research, it seems the shaker is indeed that perfect combination of both rare and desirable
and Mrs Cranky pointed out that the woman who "accidentally" took the decanters (but nothing else from the lot) was also the person who tried and failed to snipe the lot in the last few seconds of the auction, so I'm glad our timing for picking it up and getting them back worked out. The decanters are worth about $100 each, maybe a little more so this whole lot has quite a high value.
Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?
So, I found what I consider to be the polar opposite of a good deal today, in a small shop on the Italian border.
A bottle of tequila for just under a thousand euros, any takers?

Actually, that may be a good deal for your part of the world. The local "mega-retailer" in my area lists it as:
Clase Azul Anejo Tequila
750ml
$599.99

988 euros is $1,067 US. While that's a princely sum, it's still cheaper than a bottle of 25 year old Pappy in my neck of the world.

Well I kinda might have got a good deal today.... emailed a fella in Montana and he gives me a ring... nothing set in stone but I might have my foot in the door! I was always told if you do what you love you'll never work a day in your life, well I love distillation and all it's facets. I'd love to come run whiskey for ya sir! Now the wait until his second plated column is finished built

Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?
Mrs Cranky and I are getting ready to make some changes in our lives so we are packing up the house. We've already sold off a significant portion of our antiques collection but there are still a lot of higher value porcelain and glass items that require significant cushioning to make any kind of trip so most will be used for that.

Wow so you might go work for a distiller? Are they a craft size setup? I thought about doing that myself, but the one distillery that I wanted to work for sold out...Pookie wrote: ↑Sat Dec 07, 2024 3:32 pm Well I kinda might have got a good deal today.... emailed a fella in Montana and he gives me a ring... nothing set in stone but I might have my foot in the door! Scored a colour laser printer at auction for $12.50 and the picture really didn't show the size of it as it does weigh 50kg's. Anyway finally unloaded and set it up in my shed and it works purfect so now playing around making bottle labels.

I love them. Every time I go into a charity shop - we call them opportunity shops in NZ - I’m on the lookout. Up to four now. I’m a bit of a glass fan. It has been noted.
