Rolled the forums back

Post by Uncle Jesse »

Yet again.

For those of you who are unix savvy, load was at 120. Error logs through the roof. I'm going to pull in a friend or two tomorrow to see if we can suss out what keeps going wrong but I can't rule out a malicious actor. I may have to upgrade the OS and MySQL and if so, that is a lot of heavy lifting.

I missed it until TB emailed me today. Glad it's back up.

Thanks for getting it up again Jesse, and thanks for all the work you put into keeping this up and running.

Not Unix savvy, but appreciate just how much effort goes into keeping systems like this alive.

Have felt a bit lost without my nightly HD fix.

Totally appreciate the work that will be needed on your part to get this squared up.

Perhaps once the issue is resolved and all is running smoothly again, a donation push would be a good idea?

In my opinion, anyone who has benefited from the amassed knowledge here, either from direct answers to their problems, or just by reading through the forum to learn something, would be rude not to at least donate the minimum when prompted.

Yes it's getting slower for me again too.

Worse if I try to load pages one after another, then it crashes.

Admin: Let me know if I can help out by looking at logs or something. I run a phpbb board myself and also work in IT.

I suspect that the issue is bots. I monitored the amount of visitors the past hour, it went from 1000+ to ~200. I got alot of 500 errors when there were 1000+ visitors. Also a few weeks ago the forum had its peak with 2676 visitors at once.

I wrote a post in a thread a while back where I recommended Cloudflare (the post got lost in the rollback). You can get a free account and set up counter measures against the bots. I use this on my own website (before I used it I had a lot of issues with bots.) My guess is that there are aggressive scrapers reading everything on the forum to train AI

Andey, I mentioned forum slowdown to an IT guy at work and he suggested that this could be the cause too.
There are just so many people getting paid, to train AI now.
