Anyone use Stay Silv 15?

Post by fiery creations »

Anyone know how I can find out the safety of a certain brazing rod?

My welder got it all together while I was gone using Stay Silv 15. One of the welds is definitely in the steam vapor path (not alcohol). Searches on the site yielded two “id use it” with little other info. MSDS says copper silver and phosphate. Apparently cadmium is no longer used.

Do I need to start over or should it be ok?

A mega thread on brazing rods flux etc and safety would be cool. There are so many different types.

You don't need a thread full of opinions when the info you need is already posted online by the manufacturers. I found the answer with one Google search.

Link? Because all I saw was certified drinking safe with no mention of high temp distilling etc. And even that had conflicting answers from certified plumbers.

Sure have. Right after I do my research and ask the body of knowledge with more experience than me for their opinions and experiences after having actual used and done it. Didn’t think a mod would chastise me for trying to be safe. Have a nice day

If you're concerned, maybe you can tin the brazed surface with silver solder. I've never tried it, I don't even know if you can, but I can't imagine why you couldn't.

Basically just cover it up? That’s a great idea I didn’t even think to do, thanks!!!

And this is why I ask. If it works, a super simple work around to not even worry about it

So, a clear answer won't be forthcoming for the next person who blunders into this thread?

My answers for material safety questions have always come from the suppliers of the materials. It has saved me making novice mistakes, even before the advent of the internet as we know it now.

In this case, it's like using a bullet on something that's already dead.

This is what I Love/Hate about this site

too many "smart" folks who don't share their knowledge

I have spent many many hours trying to find info on brazing rods.... and have always come up short

one time, the consensus is to NEVER use phosphorus
the next time phos is fine

as for the manufacturers.... I have yet to find one saying any of their products are safe for distillation of ethanol

NZChris, if you have link to a manufacturer saying phosphorus is safe for distillation, please post the link. I have found MANY posts asking, not just me.

Brazing with Stay Silv 15 or any Stay Silv alloys are great for copper to copper fits. They are for structural use ie HVAC/R pipes and tubing. They are not made for potable water use.

Stay silv rods gets used on water systems, any copper looped in the ground, under the slab has to be brazed. It can be used in our hobby, it's just a high temp rod, 1200 or 1400 liquid point.
The rolls of soft silver solder with the right flux such as Harris stay bright with harris liquid stay clean is strong as well.

You can use it anywhere you want. It's not for potable water. It's a phosphorus based alloy.

A plumber who is brazing a copper pipe for potable water in situ, is only able to flush the finished work with water. That isn't a problem for us with our extensive chemical cleaning and often scrubbing.
