A refit on a used keg drain

Post by Sailman »

I picked up a used boar keg this past weekend. There was a half inch bottom drain that was put in with a fitting with silicone. Also there was gavin on spike used. The plan is to go back with a one inch weld spud and new piping all out of stainless. The fittings in the twelve inch Pipe nipple have m p t threading. What can I use to prevent gawling? I need something that's gonna seal and is safe..

PTFE Plumbers tape. With the large hole for access (4"?) you could also use a bulkhead tri clamp fitting.

You are correct. The large hole is four inches and it's going to get a cap and a ptfe gasket. The bottom drain was what I was more concerned about. For some reason I think I read that p.T f e and SS pipe threads wasn't a good mix.

Hey there Sailman....
I have a 2" stainless drain on the bottom of my boiler...
The PTFE tape and stainless work just fine with no leaks.

Thanks for the help. Just my luckk my parts will be in tomorrow and the solder and flux won't be here until next week. I've got some somewhere in the shop. But I moved and god knows where it's been packed way to.

All the parts came in and today's the day. If I can find my solder and flux. I went with one inch drain and all the parts come from supplyhouse.com .

It took several hours to find everything that I needed. And of course I had to get the wife involved and she finally found my liquid flux. The only thing left is to let it cool clean it, put everything together and do a leak test.
