Received a Boswell 13.2Gal / 50L still for my birthday in August. Swapped the supplied stainless lines with 3/4" copper, added a 4 gallon "milk jug" thumper, and used an old stainless pot for a little bit larger condenser. Using city water for cooling so I used an old 6" inline fan and adapted the biggest(and nicest looking) motorcycle radiator off Amazon to help cool the water. My last run was multiple stripping runs and a spirit run- took all day and water didn't get above 80 degrees in the 50 gal rain barrel. (Outside temps at mid 70's). Regrets: my union's off the thumper- should have reversed one so I can easily eliminate the thumper if needed will address. Mods coming up next: bigger condenser with 1/2 instead of 3/8 line.... Let me know your thoughts and questions - the radiator mod was something I found a lot of people talking about but hadn't seen it done yet!! Any feedback good bad or otherwise I'll take!!!

Since you already have a big fan and you're running outside, you could try your hand at an air cooled condenser instead of the worm?

When stripping, you don't want the thumper inline, so yeah you need to change that fitting to suit but that's an easy fix.

Ah thanks. I found that on Amazon. Stainless
Steel Lab Jack Scissor Stand Platform (4" x 4") it was $13.54. I had been putting anything I could find to jack up my catch jars. Not a problem any more.

My design hasn't changed since I came up with a plan which fortunately has planned out nicely! It's been refined though! I've but now reneu'd and enlarged my Liebig (fm 18" to 24" and ~1" to 1 1/2" dia) And! my reservoir bucket!!! The Column is foam wrapped against winds. I have to stand on the stool to read my column thermometer!
This will run much cooler for longer which was my prev problem! No more!!

Here's what I'm working with. Well, mostly. This picture is old and I've rearranged a little bit, but that's the idea. It's an 8-gallon brew kettle modified to take two 1.5KW elements with 2" triclamp fittings. I liberated the lid's rim with an angle grinder and soldered on a stainless steel mixing bowl to act as a dome. Condenser is an 18" shotgun with 7 internal tubes, and baffles every couple of inches. I also have a shotgun reflux condenser and 3 bubble plates, but I don't run reflux very often.

Power control is an SCR with Auber controller built into a junction box with a cooling fan. Luckily, the house has two 20 amp circuits in the kitchen, one outlet on either side of the sink.

I'm happy with it overall.

Yeah thanks. I overbuilt it so it can stand up to most boiler and heating upgrades that I'm ever likely to do given the size of our property.

Test running my oldest still today, for the first time since 20-25 years. This is Natalia, a Portuguese Alambique, that my wife, then gf, gave to me for xmas, when she still thought this was a good and wholesome hobby. She doesnt anymore…

I used to make Brandy with it when I lived in Portugal, 10 liter of white wine from Minho, where the best grapes for Brandy, or Aguardente Vinica as it’s really called, are grown, only used to cost 5 Euros. I am trying to find the best power setting to get the optimal flow. The low wines come from yesterday’s sacrificial on the big still, Unni, and holds after dilution 32% abv. The first 0.5L collected in this run has an ABV of 74%, so I think I’ve found a sweet spot now.

I am planning to use Natalia when distilling infusions for Aquavit, Gin and other macerates I’ve made. I am also planning to do series of smaller 25L batches of Bourbons where I will using unusual grains as flavor component. I’ll do the stripping run in my big still and then do the spirit run in Natalia.

35L Digiboil with oakstills parts, including a few extra elbows which were attached for the vinegar and cleaning runs, but removed for the first real run. Helmet is for looks and a bit of copper, and included copper mesh inside of sight glass and off cuts in the boiler.
