I have been making wine, fruit wines, cider, mead, rice wine, and other alcoholic drinks for years and am looking to start making distilled spirits as well. I have been wanting to start distilling for years, and lurked on this form at various points, but have never actually gotten around to building a still. I recently got a bunch of copper pipe for free and am currently gathering the other materials I will need and trying to finalize a still design.
I was initially planning to make a bokakob reflux still based on recommendations on the wiki but after reading through the forums I'm thinking of making a ccvm still instead. So far I have various lengths of 1 1/2", 3/4", and 1/2" copper pipe, a keg to use as a boiler and a propane burner for heat. I'm thinking of making a 1 1/2" ccvm still, and using the 1/2" and 3/4" for a liebig condenser. Iām planning on using csst for the reflux condenser. I know 1 1/2" is smaller than than might be optimal but I want to make something with what I already have to keep my costs low to start. I can always upgrade down the line if I like this hobby and find it lacking.
