This build fascinates me. I would love to better comprehend the physics and theory behind your design, especially the bubble caps. I've not seen anything quite like this on these boards...not that I haven't looked at an abundance of builds. Direction to specific links would be greatly appreciated (if possible) as I'm sure PP would rather spend time building than explaining. Thanks in advance. Keep the pics coming.

I use a 4 to 1 mix of water and muratic acid. It makes cleanup much easier.

Poitín Paddy it would be hard to point you to one place. I've just studied all I can on here about flutes and plated columns. Checking out all the new builds and experiments done by many. I've also read a bunch elsewhere some from experts some from other hobbiest. And I compiled what I got from all that and came up with something I want to test. I have a reason I built it the way I did. But until I get it built and get some numbers to crunch. I would rather hold off on going into detail about that.

Does anyone else ever feel like your trying to build a frackin space shuttle with frackin basic hand tools?

The rest of this portion of my build is a little secret. So I'm not going to post anymore pics till its together. So stay tuned kiddies. We will be back to regularly scheduled copper porn programming. As soon as we can. I not have to work on some other stuff to tide you guys over.

My new tip for my torch is different then the last. It throws way more heat out. It's gona take some getting use to. That and I'm working inside instead of the front porch. I don't have the wind to contend with. I'm not happy with these first solder joints. I think I'm going to go get a smaller tip today.

if you knew somebody that was really good on a lathe you could cut female threads on the inside of one of the ball halves and then solder in a "shoulder" on the inside of the other half and cut male threads on that and screw the halves together, it could be done but would take some serious skill

Everythings going as planned. Knock on wood. I should have this thing ready for cleaning runs Saturday and a test run Sunday. Need to add the bottom flange and finish two easy flanges. Then solder the final assembly together. And cut sightglasses out. I can't wait. Man I've been missing this stuff for too long. I'm ready to get some stuff going.

Tell your guy to save one for me and I'll pick it up the next time I'm in Kansas ;)
The hardware store wants something like $80 for them... an obvious ripoff, but some granny will buy one for catchin rainwater I'm sure... I know most of the brute trash cans are FDA approved... something just turns me off to using mine though lol

I've got 3 barrel reconditioning places around here. For the 55 with a removable top they want from $40 to $50. The 30gal $30 to $40 and the 15 gal $15 to $30. But I have always been sceptical about getting them from them. You never really know what was in them? Legally they can't be used for food again. But yet they label them food grade. Just because they are food grade doesn't mean they dint have something nasty in them. But with these I know what was in them and they are free.

Update in the build. Sorry life got in the way.other things got priority. Not by choice. But I got that all taken care of and I should be back to the build tonight.

Another note. Picked up 80 foot of 10/4 cable yesterday. Extra from a contractors job. I asked him how much he wanted for it. He said take it. It's paid for. And we have tons back at the shop. Hell yeah! I will turn it into a 50 foot extension cord. With two uses. One so I can run my still where ever I want in the basement. Same with welder. And two power extension for my toy hauler trailer. Will just need to make up some adapters for different plugs. I already have about 20 foot of it. So I got more then enough for my controlling build. Plus 15 foot of 10/3 for the elements.

You know what. Something or someone just doesn't want me to finish this damn thing. Was soldering the lower column attachment to the ball. And I couldn't get the flame to stay right. The oxygen kept changing. Tanks full. WTF messed with it got it good for a bit. Then it went out of whack again. WTF looked up at the low side gauge to find it just climbing. I reached up to turn it down and POP. Pfssssss. Shit the diaphragm blew in the regulator. Mutha efer. :wtf: This just ain't going good. Now I got to find another oxy regulator. I think we mite have an extra at work?

If it ain't one thing its another.
