Actually I think " The village idiot" was a good title for you; I can't understand why it was changed . I am happy with "Swill Maker".
Unless Dingo was actually a troll, he copped a lot of flack for asking questions in other threads; and I am sure an aeon is less than five months if you'r a potstiller
I believe in giving everyone an equal chance; if they have a gripe they should be able to express it without recrimination.
I would suggest everyone look up the difference between Mentor and Critic; my interpretation is from caring teacher to a paid slut.

Re: Asking dumb questions
I know this is of topic, and I say this with the greatest respect airhill - and I mean that in all sincerity - but periods of time is one area with which I am quite familiar, although I don't understand how this "...and I am sure an aeon is less than five months if you'r a potstiller ..." relates to pot stiller in particular or any other stiller.
Now, back to the topic about dumb questions...
Aeon = extremely long, indefinate time.

Re: Asking dumb questions
Funny thing is these complainers never actually see how long suffering our admin/mods/mentors actually are. I have seen basic quastions answered over and over and over again by the guys. For example, "1 lb sugar/gal equals 7% abv." In readin' and researchin' I'll bet I've seen that 5 times in the past week. I'll bet its in at least 50 times that many posts. I don't ask a lot of questions, mostly because I want to know what and why, not just the answer. But every time I have been stumped and asked I have gotten reasonable and helpful answers.
In addition the board index has a very nice organizational design. It is well set up for new destillers and it is beyond me why some don't take advantage of that. When I started distillin' I had a book, a desire, and a lot a mistakes I had to figure out my self. It was in my quest to answer those problems that I finally found the parent site. Bein' the dumb ass I am it was a few months before I actually realized this forum existed.
I appreciate what I have found here, it is a great resource. So thanks!!

what was the guys question anyways?
most of the time, the shit just gets dished out to the newbies because of (A) as of anything in life,, when your new, people are gonna test you. (if some one has found a "happy place" where life is just grand let me know) but until then,, its just human nature. it hapens everywhere,,,, yes, even on the internet.
and (B), heres a comon senerio,,, " hi, im jo blow, been lurking for a few months now, and thought that i should post. my first question is ,,,,, where should i put the rubber bung on my potstill for the thermometer?" WELLLLLLLLLLLLLL thatsbullshit. if they have been lurking for even just for a few days, you should know the answers to both.
iv been flamed more than once here, as im sure that most have, but i aint crying about it..
suck it up people. if you dont get the answer your looking for, so what,,,,, ask another and EVENTUALY, if your question really is that important to you, youll stumble across it on the way.
i dont give out info, because i know little, hell,, i just try to throw up a funny pic now and then,, or crack a joke to lighten things up,,, but some of these fellas got more years on a still than i got candles on my birthday cake.
they dont owe ME,, or anybody else shit,, so i apricate what they do here. some people just think that everything should be handed to them...
ok,, im done

Re: Asking dumb questions
I agree whole heartedly I my self am a newbie at this hobby it took me 2 months of reading and just surfing the forum to get a feel or some understanding of just when what where and how much but most of that really did not make real sense untill I but the fire under my first mash and mister it came to lite some pepole ride on shirt tales of others while some grab the bull by the horns. I have enjoyed every minute of HD even watching some shirt tale riders get whipped for asking the same question that was answered 2 post before they asked it, if a lot of newbies would heed the advise of the parent site READ READ READ and READ again, our mentors, moderators and experienced distillers would not have to feel has if somebody is just using their experience and hard work to make their own life easier and not have to put the time in, not all questions are dumb but most have been answered already. Thanx to you that help make this possible and thank you for your time I am PS if you don't agree prove different don't argue never learned anything while running my mouth
It is what you make it

Re: Asking dumb questions
Here's my take on it.
Sometimes questions are asked that just shouldn't be answered. I see questions all the time showing that the person asking hasn't done much in the way of reading on the basics of distilling. Sometimes it's just a guy that's way to overeager to get started, sometimes it's just that they can't be bothered to study. Either way it dangerous, look at our hobby, we take flammable liquid and gas load it into a pot it in a pot a light a fire under it, this is a serious hobby.
If I where to just answer the question a send them on their marry way when I can tell they don't have the faintest idea of what they're doing what kind of asshole would I be? If I say here's the answer have fun and they burn a apartment down then what?
If your neighbor bought a 12 gauge shot gun and brought it over to you with a box of shells in his hand with a confused look on his face asking,"ok I have a gun but where do the shells go?" I sure as hell hope you would tell him to read the manual and get some training. If he came back the next day and asked,"what end goes boom?" I'll bet you would read him the riot act. Same thing with stilling, guy buys a still and doesn't know what end the liquor comes out and wants to make shine tomorrow.
After reading thousands of posts from our new members I can tell whose read the textbook and who hasn't. If a guy reads and asks for clarification, or doesn't understand, or can't find the info then at least he's put some effort in and I'll give all the help I can. Or maybe he just wants to know where to start,( I've got pm box full of that question) the info is overwhelming and I can understand that.
If a guy come here asking for advice and doesn't like the advice I give him he doesn't have to heed it, but I'm going to tell him what I think. If my advice is stop what your doing and an additional 80 hours of reading you don't have to like it. No one's going to force you to do it but don't expect my help, there are other folks that did the studying and want to learn, they're the folks I'm going to help.
If that makes me a dickhead I can live with it.

Re: Asking dumb questions
Questions can be like sneezes.. 1 or 2 and its Bless you.. But after 20 or 30 it's " hey, Go blow you f%@#@# nose!!" It has to get tiring answering the SAME question over and over...
I joined a Beer fourm months ago. Now have 3 Posts too my name because all I did was search and read and every answer I needed had already been given dozens of times. HD is no different, as is any forum, site.. The answers have been given before and you can tell if the research had been done by the questions asked. The mentors and mods are not tired of questions, just lazynes!! My opinion and I am sticking to it!!

A.D.D. and HD don't go together. This hobby takes time and dedication to learn and do it right and safe.

Seeing that it was started by an Aussie wanker - here come the accusations of rascism again - I reckon it's up to an aussie wanker to put it down. It's more than served it's purpose. bye Bye dingo.
