Aging Idea, oak canning jar lids
I am a total Newbie when it comes to distilling but I had a thought but do not have the tools to do the project so I can just share my idea.
Simple really, cut a wooden disc the size of a canning jar lid and toast or char one side and use the metal canning jar lids band to hold the disk in place.
This would allow you to age on oak, use a jar to have visibility, and allow the angles their fair share, oak in a jar will not allow for this.
You would have to store on it's side or upside down to get contact with the liquid.
The problem is the band width and getting a wide enough piece of wood secured to the jar.
Also maybe you could tell me if the surface area of a wide mouth jar lid is enough to age with.

Now thats what I call thinking outside the barrel...
but you already identified some of the problems with that... Might be novel if you could pull it off, but its nevr going to beat a barrel...

Not to burst your bubble but it has been done there is a pretty long thread on it somewhere around here. I can't remember who it was. Do a search you mite find it. If I run across it I will post a link for you. I was thinking about going back and reading it again anyway.

I've been told that my train runs on a different set of tracks. Not sure how to take that.

Hack did them lids. They held some promise but did not live up to expectations as I recall.

Re: Aging Idea, oak canning jar lids
I have been kicking this idea around since I first read about it years ago. Every time the thread came up again I would think "there has to be a good way to do this." Well, finally I stopped thinking about it and started working on it. I have a prototyper that I worked with for several versions and we finally came up with a product that fits the jars without leaking and does not break the glass due to swelling. 100% American white oak with no sealants or anything else. They are not cheap to produce (my prototyper also did the first production run, his machine does them 1 at a time), but they work perfectly.
Would anyone be interested in purchasing the lids? I'm happy to ship them anywhere in the US. They are coming "raw" because I know everyone has their own preferences as far as toast and char. Please let me know, I have a limited number now but I'm trying to figure out if it would be worth doing a much larger run. If people want to send me a PM we can work out how to do payment and shipping.

I have tested these out on a number of sizes of mason jars. The first test was a 1/2 gallon water only test, the test went 2 weeks with the jar on its side and not a single drop leaked (the picture on the washing machine). I've also tested overnight on quart and pint jars. I currently have one on a pint jar filled with white rum at 63%. You can see the picture with the two lids, the jar on its side is the pint jar I just filled an hour ago, no leaks. It's using a very light toast (400 degree oven for 1 hour), and the one leaning up on it has a slightly higher toast (400 degrees for 2 hours) which tested on the quart jar overnight with no leaks. You could put an alligator char on these without affecting its ability to seal if you're more into the char (I think Pugi's method if I remember correctly). The wide mouth jars all have the same lid dimensions so it will even work on 1 cup wide mouth jars if you're doing really really small batches. If anyone is interested in fine tobacco, you can stuff a pint jar completely full of curing tobacco leaf, making sure to press out all of the air, then seal it with one of these lids for some fine barrel cured tobacco. This will also work on small batches of wine, or you can soak one of these in dark rum and use it to rum barrel age a quart of Russian Imperial Stout for those cold winter nights.
I'm not an expert in shipping but I assume I can ship these easily anywhere in the continental US and probably a little more expensive to Hawaii or Alaska. I would have to check on rates though.
I meant to make these years ago but life gets in the way of hobbies. Like I said I have a limited run of these to test interest, so if you want one let me know. I'm not certain when I can get a larger order done because my prototyper isn't set up for larger runs. It could be a while until I'm able to restock.
