Distilling Book Suggestions ?

Post by mash rookie »

Do you guys have suggestions for good books on our hobby? I am going to buy more books for my dad. He would rather read a book than surf online.

I have the complete distiller and Making pure corn whiskey. I have given these to my father.

Rubber Duck suggested “Manufacture of whiskey Brandy and Cordials” by Hirsch
Thanks RD, I found it on Amazon and it is on its way.

Maybe even fun reading? What about that Alaska bootlegger book I have heard about?

The book that got me back to researching this after a 17 year lull. Moonshine by Matthew B. Rowley. Warning: It's by no means a good book to learn the hobby from. But it was a fun little read. It has little fun bits about the history of moonshine in it. That I found funny and interesting. I guess you could build a still and make a wash then distill it using the info in this book. But I learned so so much more reading HD. That's not covered in this book. But I would buy it again. More of a comedic look into Moonshining.

MR - a book that I highly recommend is: Yeast: The Practical Guide to Beer Fermentation by Chris White. I think I got it from Northern Brewing but can't really remember.

It's focus is on fermenting for beers but it has really given me a much better understanding of yeasts and how to use them for the best results.

Chris White is the owner of White Labs, a major yeast producer primarily for the beer industry and hobby beer makers.

Edit: I started with Rowley's book, it's a good start but pretty basic.

How about that Artisan Distiller's Handbook. It's a PDF you can download for free. I thought that was a pretty good read, broad strokes.

MR, I bought two copies of the Alaskan Bootleggers Bible thinking I would give a copy to my son-in-law that got me started in this hobby. He already had a copy of the book so I have an extra, I will be home (currently in Seattle) tonight and can check my calendar when I will be in the San Juan's. Send me an email where and when you will be out and I will trade you a one of the books for a drink or two. It's not a complete book of distilling but has some interesting thoughts, recipes, and plans for building.

Sounds great. I think you already have my email but I will make sure you do before I go. I will let you know where I am planning to be during the month so we can work it out. Heading down to the boat soon. Worked on her all day yesterday. I fixed the forward head and got the oil changed in the engines. I will check the transmissions and v drives today. Its always a lot of work to get ready for a trip. Lots to stock up and plan for. Damn well worth the effort though.

Ya that's a good one.

Don't forget about Riku's book. It's more geared to the the builder and advanced distiller but it's top notch.
