HI

Post by GRDB »

Howdy, I am a bus. admin. student at a local community college and would like to start a distillery in the US. The only experience that I have with this is drinking the end product. I hope to be able to contract with one of the established boutique/artisan/craft (whatever they are calling themselves) distillers in the area to both cut costs and and gain practical experience.
In this endeavor I would like to produce gin to begin with, moving into locally sourced wine to fortify, grappa and brandy and then into rye whisk(e)y. Maybe in the distant future sake, but that is another forum. I am mainly "working" on the gin to get started, I've lurked for a little while trying to answer questions before voicing them, but I am a little stuck now.

Welcome to the boards GRDB... :ewink:

IMO, if you want to make a career out of distillation then it has to start somewhere with a hands on approach.
Theory is one thing, but its only a percentage of the whole picture...

Glad to have ya... Stay safe man...

Welcome to HD, there must have been a recent TV program or something as it seems like we are getting a record number of new members. Anyway you found this site which means you just struck the mother load for information. Enjoy your reading and like Samohon says it can be addicting (I am referring to the hobby).

Well, I haven't seen any shows lately since we cut out the cable and I am too lazy to wait for HULU. I was directed here 'politely' by some of the fellas (and gals) over at the ADI. I wasn't at all aware that there was much of a community for this kind of thing. Very much portrayed as hush hush and a little bit of voodoo. As far as getting some practical experience that comes down to who is actually running a legal still in the mid west states and how far my wife and kid will allow me to travel to learn. However I've been told that every bit counts so here I am.

So you are looking to get practical experience from home distilling? So you can move on to the pro side? What are your goals? Start a distillery or work for one?

I personally would like to be "master of my own fate" with owning a distillery, working for one would be a great start. There is one close that I hope I can get my practical experience from and also utilize its resources as the base of my product. Not only will this help support local business but should cut the cost of GNS significantly to boost my own profits.
