Heating element broke?

Post by Odin »

Guys,

What can be wrong? Just started up another stripping run. Wash heated up ... and then stopped heating up. Now, since I distill with an electric heating element in the wash, this is what I did. First I checked the power controller. That worked fine on other apparatus, so is fine. Then I changed the cord from the power controller to the heating element in the boiler. Nothing happened, so the cord is fine too. What can be wrong? Only the heating element is left.

But how can this break down? I had it covered in liquid always. Can it be like a connection in the heating element. Any ideas of taking it apart and doing something clever?

Usually when an element fails its done for. Ain't no fixin it. And it sounds like that's what you got.

Do you have a multi meter you can check continuity of the element with?

I wondering how long heating elements last and came across this in homebrewtalk http://www.homebrewtalk.com/f170/how-lo ... ig-315061/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow The bottom line is they should last awhile. With that said, It is the only part left but you should be able to check it with a meter if you have one.

I don't have a multimeter, but will look into that. Thanks guys! Yeah, they should be good for some time. I have this element for just a year. F*ck!

Make sure the pot is empty when you check it with the meter! Or remove and give it a look over to see any holes or blowouts!

It was the element and it was broke and beyond repair. Yes, it is pretty much a "it works or not" kinda thing, I guess. Had bought it at the local brewshop, less then a year ago. Went back, changed it for a new one. 2.4 KW again, only a newer, slightly bigger model. Happy that everything works again. Everything? Well tomorrow I have to fit my potstill head on my new boiler. That way I can use my 50 liter Olive Oil Can for fractionating and pot stillin' as well. Only the other way around, I guess.

I think this hobby is addictive. Really. When some of my distilling equipment breaks down, I really get "withdrawel" reactions. A weekend without distilling is like a weekend ruined. F*ck! I think I am not 23 anymore. I can imagine myself saying words like that 20 years ago. Only not about distilling.

Okay guys, have fun! I am of to the weekly "spend time with the mss together because that is so nice, so let's go dancing!" Yes, really nice, only not. Good thing is: when that shite is finished, I appreciate the weekend even more. Especially with 50 liters of second gen all malted rye UJ waiting to be pot distilled on Sunday.

Odin out (for now).
