Need help with temperatures

Putting older posts here. Going to try to keep the novice forum pruned about 90 days work. The 'good' old stuff is going to be put into appropriate forums.

Need help with temperatures

Post by Brillo67 »

Hi All,
I am new to the art of distilling and have a few questions about knowing what temperatures the Heads, Hearts and Tails start/end at. I have looked around on the site and was not able to find what I was looking for. I am still building my pot still and burner, but I am trying to do as much research and learn as much as possible before I start my first run. All help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Your not going to find much because making cuts with temps with a pot still is not advocated here. Taste smell and feel is how you should be making cuts. Here is some reading that may help you. All found in the must read new distiller reading lounge.

Hi Brillo,
I think you'll find the answer to your questions in this thread:

It's a common question, and there's lots of good explanation there. I'll leave you to your reading, but the short answer is...you cannot do cuts by temp. The temp of the vapor coming off solution in the pot is determined by alcohol content of that solution. Further, that changes throughout the run as the alc is depleted from the solution (ie., the temps continually rise). Because of that, you can have heads at 90%, or you can have heads at 65%...just depends on where you started.

I see "P" beat me to it :)
