New season of Tim/Tickle (moonshiners) starts in Nov

Post by Husker »

Guess we can expect a flood again. I will work to make sure the site is fully ready. Might get with Dave, and see if we can be ready if we need to bump up more memory, or disk, or an additional CPU or something. We also should audit the DB, to make sure we are caching in a way that works well as the load increases.

I got a lot of this working MUCH better over the last couple of years, but this show can double, tripple or even MORE our 'normal' traffic. Also, these are drive by hits, meaning they have none of the eye candy files (all of the icons', glyphs, corners, etc), so each one of them hits us much harder than a normal user who has been on the site, and their browser has all of these files cached already.

I will also need to make sure that I get my site sucker warning scripts working a little more cleanly, so that if people start to suck HD for offline reading, that we shut them down QUICKLY. One person running a site downloader (like teleport), can make things very slow for the rest of HD users. If we have a LOT of people hitting the site at the same time, it can be horrible for performance.

tim/tickle. Yipppeee! :(

Thanks for keeping us up to speed. Its a pita when the site runs slow. Hard to believe all those people buy into that BS show, like the "star" would actually be running around with a cameraman filming 27 felonies

Would a denial of service attack on discovery be wrong? We have 14,000 members, fair is fair right.

Trust me, we are the ones going to get the DOS from the many drive by hits. Our site simply is pretty 'small'. We do not have a huge amount of resources paid for. Our bandwidth is not great, our CPU/memory is very small, etc. It is 'good enough' for the amount of traffic we have. However, when we double, tripple or even more that amount of traffic, and have the site get hit harder than normal for each average access, then what we have shows that it may be under powered.
