Rubber Taste

Post by m1ch43l »

I am getting a rubber taste in my distilate. My theory is the rubber stopper holding the thermometer at the top of the column. I know aluminum is bad but could i use a piece of aluminum foil under the stopper to prevent the taste transfer. Or would I just be introducing a new taste into the output.

no rubber...no aluminum...what type of still is it? Is the still the kind with a big white or black stopper at the top of the column? If so try and replace with a natural cork stopper. Some people have also turned a wooden disk to fit the top opening.... If it is just a small 1/4" port on the side, try flour and water paste...but make it thick like bread dough and wrap a wadge around the thermometer and port...it will dry out and get hard and seal as the column gets hot...works great for me as my boka has a small port for the thermometer on the side.

Thanks for the reply. I somehow posted to the wrong board. Thought I was on Q & A with Mentors. I will try to repost.

Sorry didn't answer your question. Still has a big white rubber stopper at the top of the column that holds the thermometer.

MK need in reposting. It would just get deleted since you already post it once. No need in double posting.

Find a cork stopper. Or wrap it with PTFE tape. I even seen someone use a potato.

Wasn't my idea. I came take credit for it. And I can't for the life of me remember who it was. But he did say it was like a baked potato after the run was done.

Yes, of course. Only Copper, Stainless steel, flour paste or PTFE... and PP's potato trick may work...

No Rubber, Silicon, Plastic, Etc...
