My sugar wash from a beginner distiller

Post by pg55 »

After a trail run distilling water and was happy with how my walmart pot worked, I am starting my sugar wash. I do make country wine and one of the wines I make is called Skeeter Pee, a lemon wine. Why not just follow the SkeeterPee.com recipe just adding more sugar and no lemon.

So here it is I started on 6/11/13 pm.
about 4 gallons of water
8lbs sugar
6 tsp yeast nutrient(3 now, 3 later)
2 tsp yeast energizer(1 now, 1 later)
1 packet of RedStar Pasture Champagne yeast

I took 1/2 gallon water and mix in 8lbs sugar in a ss pot.
Brought it up to almost boiling then cut stove off. Stirred on and off for a few minuetes.
Added more water to pot to cool off mixture before adding to primary bucket.
added more cool water in bucket till I got close to 4 gallons about a sg of 1.09 to 60F.
Covered mixture, not air tight
The next morning after checking temperature (wanted about 80F ), I added 3 tsp of yeast nutrient and 1 tsp yeast entergizer.
Stirred mixture and wait about 15 minuetes before adding yeast. Add yeast per package directions. Cover loose.
When mixture gets to 1.04 to 1.03 sg add the rest of yeast nutrients, energizer.
Fermet dry and transfer if you want to cartboy and bubble lock. Wait till yeast drop to bottom , a week or 2, and siphon to your distilling pot. Distill as you normally do.

What do you think?

if you heat the water to almost boiling, then slowly add sugar you dont have to stand there and stir til it desolves,or worry about burning to bottom of pan.

Walmart pot. I'm guessing you have built a pot still? Sugar washes are good for reflux stills making neutral. Although it van be done with a pot still. If ran multiple times diluting with water to under 40% every time. For a pot still you would be better off doing a sugarhead like UJSSM or sweetfeed or even all bran. From the tried and true recipe section.

The reasons I am doing a sugar wash are that I could make this quick, cheap just using sugar, I had all the stuff I needed, good learning curve for my first run and I get to make some apple pie shine.

You'll be fine, we all gotta start somewhere. If I have to guess not only will you evolve from the sugar wash but also from the small pot. Good luck

For the record, if you're at Walmart, you can pick up a bag of cracked corn (in their pet food aisle) and then take a stab at the Uncle Jesse Sour Mash recipe. You can click the link in my signature below to see my notes on it. It's a fantastic recipe, and all the ingredients can be purchased at Walmart (assuming yours sells the cracked corn like mine does).

That Uncle Jesse recipe is fantastic and easy to make, in my opinion. I have some aging on Jack Daniels oak chips and it tastes better than anything which can be purchased in stores.

I cheched my sg the other day and it was 1.03 so I am on my way for sure. I did add 1 teaspoon yeast nutriant and 1/2 teaspoon yeast energizer to give it a little kick towards the end. It is fizzing good. Yea I could see me using a bigger still in the near future. I all ready see the limits on me from a 4 gallon pot. I do have 5lbs of flaked corn and 1lb of barley. I will try my hand at an corn whiskey for sure. Thanks for the tip of looking at walmart for cracked corn.

SG today was a .993. Transfer it to my secondary and airlock with volka. Gonna let it sit for a week or two.
