Yeast for ujssm
I am currently using dried active bread yeast for sugar washes, and now for my ujssm (first batch). Is this ok, as the local brewing shop only has turbo yeasts. Or from the agricultural shop I can buy 2 kg of "brewers yeast" for $25 ,But it's in the horse food section, should I be skeptical, and keep using the bread yeast? $4/ 300g.

Also, should I use a yeast nutrient? If so, what and how much?

Bakers yeast works great, don't waste your money on the fancy stuff. Especially the turbos...
Brewers yeast has a good rep, never used it though..

You have to be careful with anything labeled as brewers yeast. What he is talking is more then likely a vitamin supplement. It will not work. It is dead yeast. Collected from brewing beer. It is for nutrition only. Could be used for nutrients for the yeast in a wash.Stainless dude wrote:Bakers yeast works great, don't waste your money on the fancy stuff. Especially the turbos...

Beer yeast from a homebrew shop would work fine. Different ones for different types. So you need to research which would be good for what you want to make. Ask the homebrew shop what beer yeast they would recommend that has little taste influence. And will finish dry.
As far as what yeast to use? What does the recipe say to use? Last I checked it was either distillers yeast (dady) or bread yeast. But both will work fine.
Just stay away from the turbo crap. Especially in a grain ferment like UJSSM.
If your homebrew shop can't suggest a good yeast other then turbo. I wouldn't listen to them.
Third option is some EC-1118. Good wine yeast. Works slow and at a lower temp. But its dependable.
And if you already started with bread yeast? You are stuck with it. For now. Since you will be using it for your next generation anyway.
Edited to add.
Agriculture wise they do use some active yeasts for bovine digestive health. But I don't think it would be called brewers yeast. And it is a specific yeast for that use. I wouldn't use it for this hobby. As I do beleave there are additions to it for the bovines health. And I'm not really sure how well they would do anyway. Not something I would try. I'm sure someone's else mite or has. But somethin tells me its a bad idea.

Thanks alot mr p. I was getting the dogs washed at the co-op, and went for a walk around the store looking at all the different things I could ferment, n thaught I'd ask the question!
glad I didn't buy the yeast! The problem I have is the brew shop is only recommending turbos, which I want to stick clear of.

I'm sure someone down under can help you with the where. We can get the $4 for 113g yeast in jars in the grocery store, but if you shop online (here we have Sam's and Costco), you can find baking yeast for about $16 for almost a kg (2 lbs). So it's about half price buying it that way.
Then again, if you are doing a sour mash wash, you only need to add yeast once, so consecutive generations won't need it added.
