Removing paint from bottles

Post by Biggreenavalanche »

I have access to a bunch of Pendleton whiskey bottles...really like the bottle and want to repurpose for my stuff...
I CANNOT get the $&#*£€ painted lettering off...
I have tried acetone, xylitol, a dremel tool with both a wire wheel and a buffing wheel, a knife, a razor blade and finally fire...no go...
Any ideas on quick removal ?

That paint is friggin TOUGH !

Acid soak? A diluted muratic acid solution may work. Glass should be inert to the acid. And not be harmed. But the paint will.

A few years back I was going to refinish a gun and a buddy of mine said you gotta see his and how pretty it was. It was pretty but he sanded it way to much and nothing fit anymore. I think I went to lowes or HD (maybe sherwin williams) and got a paint stripper for wood furniture. It was nasty!!!!!!! It bubbled that stuck on finish off like it was nothing. I have also seen one used for cars that would work just as good maybe better. Thy mine if you can't get any others to work. Let us know what your conclusions are.

Brake fluid strips off paint pretty good. Spilt some down the side of my car when changing the fluid and didn't realise it. Couple days later had a big patch of bare steel.

Try MEK (methyl ethyl keytone). It is some nasty shiite tho, have PLENTY of ventilation. Use latex gloves, it dissolves Harbor Freight nitrile gloves!!

I could send you a bottle of my fores. I use it in rockets and to rinse the yellow stains off of the boat after a weekend in the water. Just fill the bottle with it, works from the inside out.

Try floor was stripper or just go buy you some Lye and put it in water and boil the bottles they will come clean.. use rubber gloves and be careful with the caustic... potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide ... is Lye

Will the lye ruin a stainless pot, or leave a non removable residue ? Don't wanna sound dumb, just wondering...

Could try aircraft paint remover. They sell it at auto shops. I used some last summer to strip a bike frame. The stuff is amazing.

As far as I know, you're not going to be able to get those "labels" off. They aren't actually painted. They are a powdered pigment that is applied, once the bottle is formed, and then reheated. This, basically, makes its a part part of the original glass. I believe Corona does the same thing. I could be wrong, though. This is knowledge that was passed to me, second hand.

I have a the same empty bottle of Pendleton that I am fond of. The lettering feels etched, so that sounds like plausible description.
