Re: Wineos Plain Ol Sugar Wash
I started over, had a mishap... Went to check sg and it was bubbling but not hitting the air lock much more, while it was open I didn't pay attention for a second and turned my head to see my damn dog drinking it lol.. Had his face buried in it deep...
This time I aerated and hydrated the yeast.. Used 10lbs of sugar and started with 1070.. Just pitched the yeast so we will see where it goes from here.. I have a better feeling about this go around..

Re: Wineos Plain Ol Sugar Wash
Probably would have been ok. Gets hot enough to kill most anything in distillation, and if the ferment was almost finished it would have been ok to run if you were careful.Mangler20 wrote:I started over, had a mishap... Re: Wineos Plain Ol Sugar Wash
think mine stalled a bit too, so i took some action
starting SG 1.085
checked after 11 days, the smell had changed a little (tiny bit sulfury if that is a word) and the SG was at 1.03
the bubbling was reduced on the airlock
PH 3.2
little fizzing going on, clearing of the yeast, meaning wash looked clear when I checked the SG
stirred in some more fermax and added a multivitamin and gave it another good stir. lots of fizzing and release of CO2
fermenter is in my apartment which hovers around 75 F, should be fine for the fleichmanns
will check it again in about a week to see how things are going.
also stirred my gerber, less than a week. tasted a little off my stir spoon, dang that stuff tastes dry already!
will let her settle this weekend and when I return on Sunday i will check the SG, it would be crazy if this stuff was done already, but I guess that is the point.
goodnite friends

Swisse Mens Ultivite Multivitamin version of sugar wash - just put it together- 4 kgs of sugar - 2 multivitamin tablets in 200 ml of water disolved- all into tub of around 20 ltrs -temp 34 degrees C as I pitched the yeast ( 10 tablespoons of lowans yeast ) gave yeast on top a slight stir- start SG 1.054--why swisse - cause I had them in the cubboard

Rad- I didn't add anything else other than the above -thks

my ph tends to do the same, never had a problem, never added any base, and with ph the low it keeps the baddies outbillmcc wrote:Hi all i am having a little trouble with the ph on this wash. i followed the recipe ,start sg 1.078 ph 5.5 my tap water ph is7.3 used ditillers yeast and off it went day two bubbles slowed so i checked ph = 2.9 sg 1.060 i added 3 tsp of crushed chalk more yeast and dap bubbling great again but ph still 2.9 is this ok

Sounds a bit low on nutrients unless you added the rest of the WPOSW ingredients without mentioning them...wombat wrote:Swisse Mens Ultivite Multivitamin version of sugar wash - just put it together- 4 kgs of sugar - 2 multivitamin tablets in 200 ml of water disolved- all into tub of around 20 ltrs -temp 34 degrees C as I pitched the yeast ( 10 tablespoons of lowans yeast ) gave yeast on top a slight stir- start SG 1.054--why swisse - cause I had them in the cubboard

Re: Wineos Plain Ol Sugar Wash
I stick to my aforementioned recipe and it ferments fast and clear. The fermax has most of the nutrients in there... DAP, epsom, yeast hulls, etc. I add the two nutes if it is a wash 6 gallons or greater, otherwise I may use one. I use 1 tsp over the amount recommended as I noticed that if I did not it would not finish as well.
so for me a 6 gallon wash would be
11 lbs sugar, inverted in about 1.5 to 2 gallons water with a little over 1 tblsp of citric acid
30 minute invert, top off with water to 1.08 SG, about 6 gallons total volume
aerate, add fermax and two nutes.
pitch yeast at around 85 degrees, seal it up and a week later, voila. I have repeated this recipe about 5 times so far, with no issues...well except that last one

Re: Wineos Plain Ol Sugar Wash
hey wombat,
you open and check it every day? must be the newbie novelty factor, dont worry it will wear off. once you see that it is working with or without you messing with it you should consider leaving the hood down longer. messing with it less lessens the chance of infections. I usually check mine on day 5, troubleshoot if I need too, then let it ride until day 7 or 8.

Gday tomgndallas,
Ye I do check everyday - its my first multivitamin one - just wanted to get a idea of how it goes.
Thanks for advice on contamination.
Been doing turbos for awhile till I discovered this site.
Done a couple of Albran ( but using Just Bran from Aldi ).
Going to try a sweet feed when I can find out what to source here in Australia.

Re: Wineos Plain Ol Sugar Wash
Hello my distilling friends, long time lurker, first time poster.
Firstly, thanks to all the helpful and knowledgeable people here.
Now getting on with it I just wanted to chime in and give my 2c re the wposw in the hope that my experiences would help someone else.
First ferment I ever did I followed the recipie to a "T", exactly as it was suggested and the ferment took about 3 weeks to finish at about 1.010.
Not a bad first effort I thought..
Next 2 or 3 ferments I still followed the recipe to a "T" but had crap results, stalling between 1.030 and 1.020 after 3 weeks.
So I read and searched and decided to experiment a bit and I am glad I did.
I worked out all I needed to do was substitute white sugar for raw sugar, and put 1 litre of boiled yeast slurry from the previous ferment in and everything else is the same a the original wposw.
I have done over 20 of these washes now with a 100% success rate in 7 or 8 days.
For anyone who is interested, here is my 55 litre version of the WPOSW.
I am in OZ too so not sure on some ingredients (raw sugar) availability/pricing elsewhere.
12kg raw sugar
1 litre boiled slurry from previous wash.
2 tsp dap
2 tsp citric acid
2 tsp calcium
1/4 tsp epsom
1 cup dry bakers yeast (lowan)
60l fermenter.
Put everything in the fermenter (NOT THE CUP OF YEAST) and fill to 20l with 80c water and stir like crazy till all dissolved.
Fill with a hose on full pelt up to 55 litres (great aeration) and as long as the temp is below 30c chuck the cup of yeast on top and wait about half an hour.
After half an hour stir it up good and close her up.
Try keeping the wash at 28c.
3 days of flat out bubbles, tapering off to 1 bubble every 10 seconds on about day 7 or 8.
This makes an awesome neutral through my reflux setup.
Thanks again to everyone here, that is after all where all the above info I have gathered has come from
Feel free to comment/criticize.
Matt.

Gday wombat.
The dap, citric acid and calcium sulfate can be found here. (Melbourne)
http://www.grainandgrape.com.au/product ... ts_id=8195" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
http://www.grainandgrape.com.au/advance ... 5f&x=0&y=0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
http://www.grainandgrape.com.au/product ... ts_id=7482" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
Best value is the 1kg bags, last ages, but keep them in airtight containers (tupperware)
Wash starts around 1075-1080 and finishers between 990 and 995.
Where in OZ are you mate?

Re: Wineos Plain Ol Sugar Wash
fatman1972 , Hi mate as yourself i have tried 4 times to make this wash. first stalled at 1.110 thought ph was a problem but was informed they drop quite low as standard so i increased the neuts and increased ph by adding less citric number two stalled again at 1.006 so increased distillers yeast to 3/4 cup for number three and it stalled again at 1.000 number 4 is allready on its way with a full cup of dady hope this works if not i will try your method by adding 1 ltr of boiled sediment.all the stalled washes had a low yield but the neutral taste was spot on but yield was poor wich makes me want to get one of these washes in the 0.980's i'd even be happy with 0.989 thanks for your help and raw sugar here i come

Are you using/going to use RAW sugar?billmcc wrote: if not i will try your method by adding 1 ltr of boiled sediment.
I believe this is the major factor in speeding things up due to the molasses.
The yeast slurry will provides food for the living yeast.
The neutral when run through a reflux still and collected at 95% is very nice and has a slightly sweet smell which I like!
No carbon required for this stuff...
Good luck.

Has anyone scaled up this recipe? If so, are all measurements scaled up? Any results or advice with this would be appreciated. I want to do a 50 gallon wash.
