Sugar syrup

Putting older posts here. Going to try to keep the novice forum pruned about 90 days work. The 'good' old stuff is going to be put into appropriate forums.

Sugar syrup

Post by rustyone »

I have seen lots of recipes call for dissolving 5kgs of sugar in 4l of boiling water (for example). Has anyone tried doing a syrup instead? I would imagine it wouldn't make much difference at all, just for people like myself, a huge ass pot is not accessible yet (it's on the cards). I could dissolve the sugar into a syrup in batches and combine when all 5kgs of sugar has been converted into a syrup. (for those that don't know what I am dribbling about, sugar can be converted into a simple syrup, which is much sweeter than normal sugar, with a whole heap of heat and less water. It also remains liquid).

Thoughts?

Dont know if I got you right ... but...

fermenting means feeding the yeast. Yeast is killed by to much heat, alcohol, and sugar contend in the liquid. So if you make a real sweet syrup it will give the yeast a sugar shock and the yeast will do nothing. Always be kind to your yeast and your yeast will be kind to you.

Cheers

Sounds like your talking about inverting the sugar.
Alot of people already do this as a first step before adding the rest of the water to get to the SG they are looking for.

Thanks for the replies guys, so it seems to be safe. Planning to make up a batch this weekend, first one after much reading, so just wanted to make sure I wasn't going screw it up on the first attempt (at least that too early in the first attempt ;) )

For your first attempt you'd be better off using a "Tried And True Recipe" because it'll be kinda hard to ask for help when you're breaking new ground with little or no practical experience... Just a thought...

Do you realize how little finished product you're going to end up with from a 4L pot still...??? With a reflux still it would be even less...

Getting back to your somewhat vague original post, you can find lots of related information on the parent site, http://homedistiller.org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow regarding both granular and syrup based sugars...

NO...!!! YOU missed MY point... GO READ...!!!

If you need help with such a simple problem then you obviously aren't ready to dabble in this hobby/craft... I'm not being mean - merely pointing out the obvious...

haha. Excellent. Break out the warm fuzzies. Well done my friend.

We all started at the same point at sometime, a newbie. Being an ass to those that (you deem to be) asking "obvious" questions does not assist anyone. I didn't ask for my hand to be held or any step by step instructions. I asked because I had doubt about what I was doing. Asking questions is how you learn. I asked the guy that runs the local distilling supplies store in my area many of the same questions. He didn't berate me. He offered a wealth of information and advise. I am asking questions here, in the hope for the same kind of input/feedback. Not everything is obvious to the first time distiller, even after reading sites, buying books and asking questions. Even to the experienced, not everything is obvious.

Thankfully, your reactions/comments are in a very small minority on this site, with posters most being exceptionally helpful and more than happy/willy to assist those starting out. I hope we bumped heads on a bad day and this is not a real representation of a normal reception.

Thanks again.

I would go with the "tried and true" section and try bird watchers sugar wash. Then there will be no doubt about it working or not.
Then you can go do your thing later on down the road.....
