Yeast Question

Post by pumpman »

I found the fleischmann's instant dry yeast at BJ's today @ pounds for three dollars. Will this work for my needs or does it need to say dry active yeast?

Fleischmann's Active Dry Yeast in bulk is all I've used for over a year and recommend highly compared to individual sachets...

Interesting... I just took another look at their website and discovered that they also produce Fleischmann’s Ethanol Dry Yeast...

That is interesting. So I should be fine with this for now?

I'm no expert here, but from what I have picked up, pretty much any yeast that is ok for food will work. the biggest issue is how tolerant to swimming in its own feces it is... (ie: eating sugar and expelling alcahol...) some yeasts will begin to die when the alcahol hits 10%, others might go higher...

sounds to me that if you picked up a good supply for three dollars, it is pretty hard to go wrong... I would probably try a basic ferment with something that you are not too worried about as a test (ie: i would not use my preciously aquired 100% natural grape juice with a yeast I have never tried... do something with cheaper ingredients first!)

again, I am no expert, having never done this before. just what I picked up in my reading... buying 'any' food ready yeast has GOT to be better than taking your socks off and swishing your feet around in the mash to get yeast introduced! hmmm, maybe socks ON would contribute something to the flavour...

i use this exact same thing.

you can reuse the yeast at least 5 or so times before you haave to go back to the bag for fresh yeast. so will last just about forever.
of course, yeasts meant for fermentation like beer yeasts will be better suited but bakers yeast works just fine for the average joe at home
