Re: material sourcing problem
I've just began my first build too. I am not in the U.K. but have had a lot of luck at my local scrap yard/ recycle center.

Re: material sourcing problem
I think Magnum is spot on. When you are only wanting a few feet of material, a scrap yard, or chumming up with a plumber who does commerial buildings, might score you some tubing without having to buy a full length new section.
However, it is those fittings which will eat you alive in costs. There are still designs, which minimize the number of fittings (down to no fittings, but a needle valve, on one design).
Look in the New distillers FAQ (sticky post in the new distillers). There are links to some designs. Also use the forums search function (or use the link to the forum's google search for a 'better' search indexer).
Well, welcome, good luck, and have fun.

Hillbilly Rebel: Unless you are one of the people on this site who are legalling distilling, keep a low profile, don't tell, don't sell.
Re: material sourcing problem
I don't know about the in UK but in some countries it sounds easier to source stainless steel than copper...
