This 'legends' of moonshining and all this 'bovine schatology' is really so overblown it's ridiculous. You almost have to be from the South to even understand the culture. People always conjure some "Snuffy Smith" or "Deliverance" characters when they think of Deep South culture. What a load.

My family moved to what is now TN in 1682 about 20 miles from Lynchburg and their slaves ran stills long before Jasper Newton Daniel ever showed up. The family owned thousands of acres and hundreds of slaves and were doctors, lawyers, judges, senators, etc. And hell yes they drank spirits made on their own property, even had their own tannery. This was nothing exceptional. In the 1700 and 1800's EVERY farm of even a marginal size had a still. Water supplies were highly prized because there were no public water systems. The reason my ancestor picked the spot he did was because of the natural springs, in fact the family later gave the land to start a small town....it's name is my family's last name with "Springs" as the second word in the name.

Again....nothing exceptional about making whiskey. Whiskey was an elixir that was clean and medicinal. How simple is that. It's the truth.

And now some Yankee twit goes to Gatlinburg TN to a liquor store and sees "Shine on Georgia Moon" in a liquor store (they sell tons of it there to people like this) and they go.."Hey look....it's MOOOOONSHINE!" Then they conjure images of a toothless idiot with a still smoking a corn cob pipe.

In Southern culture, it's the isolated pockets that you run into here and there that are the modern day distillers that do it for a living. They're just normal people trying to make a living. They drive beat up trucks and live in trailers or run down houses from the depression era. They can be very rough people, often a little too prone to their own product. They're not seeking to be your friend, they've got their own circles they "run in" and do not welcome outsiders with open arms. They work in factories during the day and have stills in their shed, I know many of these. They're good, solid people who refuse to give in to the government tyranny though they'd never say it like that, they just do it.

They think themselves neither criminal nor noble. But in fact, these types are some of the most fiercely intelligent people you'll ever come across. Genuine ingenuity, self reliance, "more than one way to skin a cat." Oh yes....and if you piss them off just right they'll shoot you and won't think much about it. They do not engage in extensive analysis of themselves, the culture, or life......they just live. If you told them you learned "the principles of mashing distilling from a forum on the the internet" they would just look at you like you were speaking a foreign language.

The whiskey rebellion never ended, and I hope it never does. There are things that the media and the ATF still continue to criminalize. "Breeding other crimes," what a crock! These people aren't, weren't, and never will be criminals, they're just people.

I'm personally getting to the point where I hate the word "moonshine." Distilling is an art, a craft, that fortunately has not left us. Thanks to places like this, it's still got a fighting chance. I love this place, love the characters and the eccentric way they type. If you live in the South, you can hear people in the local Wal-Mart that talk the way some of these folks around here type.

I watched those videos on youtube that UJ posted. I've done it many times but I've never ever seen whiskey lose the bead that fast like that. He surely wasn't joking when he said it was "180 proof or better." That thumper keg must be doing it's job rather well. I've always thought that distillate made with thumper inline was better for purity, though I do not use one.

Dan, why worry about what people think of Southerners. Being an Australian I often get accused of having 'convicts' as ancestors by many US folk - never in this forum I hasten to add - and therefore we are considered to be foul mouthed, uncouth bastards and louts. This of course is not the case, as anyone who served with us in Vietnam will attest. It simply shows the lack of intellectual nous they have, and, I guess to a degree, their defensiveness and fear of somebody who may be different.

Take for example our current Prime Minister who is a brilliant intellectual who doesn't talk bullshit, and is admired as a leader throughout the world, as opposed to the prick we've had for the past 12 years or so.

Many in here come from different cultures, but we all have one thing in common; making quality spirits whether it be called hooch, piss, booze, moonshine or whatever, and that should be all that matters.

Personally, I take it as a compliment to be called a convict and if I could ever work out how to have an avatar it would be a bloke in broad arrow convict garb.

If you are expecting more, you will be disappointed unless you just want it for the sake of having it. You may want to contact Pam, his widow, directly and see if she has anymore of his tapes or his books to sell. I figure that way it will help her the most and I am sure she could use it. Rad, its a fair question. But her mailing address has already been posted on this thread and it is a post office box, not a physical address. Also, I have visited with Pam at her residence and have purchased Popcorn's DVD from her. I think the income would be appreciated by her. If someone writes her and she wants to give out her physical address then that would be her decision for her to make, even though she is a most gracious host.

Yea I was under the impresison already that was the only difference between the 2 versions. but I'd definitely rather have the uncut rather than the edited version. And I'll definitely be sending Pam a letter to maybe get the direct physical adddress from her, or her saying to go ahead and send the money in the next letter that gets sent to her. I'd hate to send the money order and it not still be her address, or have changed it due to the recent passing of Popcorn and maybe her PO box getting bombarded with "Fan mail". for what its worth, i believe people that know her well have put her address up online at her request, i could be wrong though, the P.O. box that is.
however, with a little searching one can find the actual address of the last residence of Popcorn. it has been in print before on the net.

the green dvd jacket is a great dvd. both versions have different stuff in them and both are worth having. however the older version popcorn had for sale is just as was said above. a little more driving around, a little more talking and its all popcorn, no filler like in the 60 min version neil hutcheson did up last year.

you might also want to check out the dvd copy of the old tape popcorn used to have for sale. i think its called 'popcorn sutton making likker a long time ago'
its worth a watch. shows you his actual operation he used.
