This falls into the fertilizer category with me. Rid-X works and so does shit. I won't use either but it is interesting information. ![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)

I don't think an MSDS can have hidden ingredients... It's supposed to be a full disclosure...Hack wrote:From what I understand food products in the US are legally required to list all ingredients on the package. Is there something similar for things like Rid-X? And even if there is, I wonder if there is an unlisted ingredient, that they may not be required to list, that could be harmful. Yes, maybe I'm a bit overcautious, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Really good point Hack; there's always that secret proprietary stuff sanctioned by law. bd

Not the case in Canada as of a couple of years ago anyways. I used to be an industrial first aid attendant and we were told that some stuff could be withheld even from MSDS lists and that in the event of an incident, the hospital would have appropriate phone numbers to call. Probably not the case with rid x, though. bd.

If a product contains a proprietary(IE: secret) ingredient that the manufacturer doesn't wish to disclose, it will be listed as such in the MSDS, with a 1-800 number right next to it for emergency personnel to contact.
Nothing can be withheld in the MSDS in any other manner; the entire MSDS system would be of no use otherwise. That whole system was created because some otherwise harmless and safe items can and will react with other otherwise safe and sound items, and with no way of knowing what really was in those items. So put away the conspiracy theories and black helicopter sightings; if it doesn't say it's in there, and doesn't say that there is something there, but you'll have to call to find out what(and if you're not a Doctor, too bad, no tell), it's not in there.

Man! I am surprised at the legs this thread has – thought it would have tailed off by now.
Hey DD, Have you tried distilling any of that stuff yet? I’m curious about the type and quantity of heads etc.
I don’t have a problem with the enzymes per se (other than they aren’t food grade), my concern is the effects of the bacteria cultures. I’ll bet the farm that they are anaerobic and will do JUST FINE in the fermentation vessel. I’ll also bet they affect the ferment someway we don’t appreciate.
I have to say those enzymes sure did a number on that corn! Can’t argue with that hygrometer reading either (I liked the wee dead fly too).
Cheers

Googling around I found this. Just thought it was interesting. It was on a septic tank thread on a forum

Delete it if I'm off topic.a few years ago, I wanted to get rid of the flesh from a deer's head so that I would have a nice pretty skull for display. I put the head in a garbage can full of water and Rid-x. The flesh was completely gone (skin, hair, muscle, cartilage, everything) in just a couple of weeks. Rid-x did a much better job than maggots.
So, I think maybe Rid-x does work.

Not off topic at all, blind drunk... That information merely further confirms that Rid-X does, in fact, help with the bacterial process... It doesn't infer that Rid-X is harmful in any way, however... I think it's a bit of a misnomer to think that Rid-X contains harmful bacteria, let alone the idea that they could survive the fermentation and distillation processes even if they were present...

I agree with your assessment. I went looking for some and found a different brand with no ingredients listed. The MSDS reveals that what I found is a non regulated product under the Consumer Hazardous Products labeling Act. I will phone them tomorrow and see what they say. Cheers, bd.... I also did a bit more research and found many uses for bacterial enzymes in alcohol and food production, water purification (even for fish and seafood farm ponds), and various other uses... The term "bacterial enzyme" sounds worse than it actually is for the most part...
Just remember, blind drunk, that most manufacturers won't comment on product use other than as originally intended so any questions should be as generic as possible...

I think you guys scared the crap out of dixiedrifter. He still hasn't told us if he completed it and drank it.

I would... I'd have no hesitation in drinking the spirits from a mash converted with Rid-X...pumpman wrote:I think you guys scared the crap out of dixiedrifter. He still hasn't told us if he completed it and drank it.

Unfortunately I had to dump the batch before being able to run it off due to some family drama.
My original intent was to see if Rid-x was capable of starch liquefaction and fermentation which it was.
I am however getting ready in the future to repeat the experiment paying more attention to details this time around.

I can see it now "LOCAL MOONSHINER CAUGHT PUTTING RID-X IN MASH THEN RUNNING IT THOUGH A COLUME FILLED WITH BROKEN GLASS, details at 11" ha

Just read this entire thread has no one tried this since it started????

I think Barney Fife tried this and posted it separately as a cautionary tale. bd.
