Chrome plated Stainless Steel Tub Drain?

Post by beelah »

I have a question about stainless steel tub drains and what I think may be chrome plating.
I am planning on building my third bokabob column and I am planning on using the inverted stainless steel bowl with a stainless steel drain as the connector to the column.
My question relates to what I think is chrome plating on the standard tub drain.
The reason that I want to use the tub drain is that it fits a 1 1/2 inch copper male threaded connector, so it would be real easy for set up and more so for take-down and dispersing (hiding) around the house and shop.
The problem is that the drain seems just too shiny and mirror bright. I think it is chrome paled, but there is nothing on the package that says that, and of course it is made in china.
Is there any safety issue related to using chrome plated connectors, if in fact they are chrome? What effect will high ABV hot alcohol have on the chrome plating?
Has or is anyone using this type of connector? I believe that I saw a recent thread where someone mentioned using a tub drain.

Sink drains are a better choice because they are available in straight stainless steel... They can be had in both standard sink drain size as well as bar sink size... The bar sink size requires a smaller hole for mounting... Both should be 1.5"...

Sounds like it's probably chrome plated. From other posts I have read, chrome is not a good idea. Besides, if its made in china, you may be getting something with trace amounts of lead. You may have to search on line for tub drains for medical or veterinary use to find one in stainless. Good luck. V

Chrome plating over brass is also common.

SS strainer basket assembly for the kitchen would be my choice.
