redistilling

Post by Shinner73 »

When I go to run my collected spirits through the still a second time, do I need to dilute them, or can I pour them in full strength and run it that way?

Ya could but most don't for safety reasons. Most seem to prefer to keep around 40 proof or so 2nd time around . Ive reran 80 proof before in metal shed with cement floor but watched it like a hawk with water hose handy .
I use a pot still.Sometimes with a thumper

Braver men than I am, gunga dins. :)

Stuff that, I'll stick to diluting being a born coward.

Simple potstiller. Slow, single run.
(50 litre, propane heated pot still. Coil in bucket condenser - No thermometer, No carbon)
The Reading Lounge AND the Rules We Live By should be compulsory reading

Cumudgeon and loving it.

A living coward instead of a dead runner. Why would you take the risk, and don't dilute?
I always dilute, rather drinking in my chair than drinking on a cloud.

But serious, what advantage is there for not diluting and do a second (or third) run higher than 40??

Rather than relying on percentages and/or proof alone, diluting to the point where your low wines won't burn is the safest bet... The initial boiler charge will have the highest concentration of alcohol and if it won't burn then, it never will... Now, should you have a catastrophic failure, you will only need to worry about the explosive vapor the still has produced and not flammable low wines because they have been rendered non-flammable... I always dilute to the point where the low wines won't burn, even using electric...

40%ABV which is approximately 80% proof.

I always dilute to 40%, triple distill sugarwash. After de third run, in my potstill, I've got 85 % clean alcohol. Smooth for making jenever, is good enough for liquors.

So I still don't understand the need of taking the risk. With diluting you can still get a high percentage. A wine lower then 40% (checked with an alcoholmeter) is save to use.
