My Pump specifications.

Post by Fermentanator »

Just looking at the max output on my pump, for my re-circulating cooling system, it is Max.1200L per hour. Converted to gallons is; 317 and a smidgeon. Will this suffice for my reflux unit?

What are some of your max outputs?

what still do you drive?

For a home still 20 ltr per minute should be more than enough.

Thats twice the output of my pump, but if you are using a coil, you dont need a pump. A pump is needed with a leibig, not with a coil.

Kinda like killing an ant with an elephant gun. But it will do. I'm working 2-3 liters per minute of cooling on my system, any more and it chuffs. (The sound a still makes when the condensor is too cold and while condensing it creates a vacuum which sucks vapour from the column. )

Hooch.

OK great, I had no idea about how much water a still will consume. My pump is completely adjustable as I installed a ball valve setup, whereby I can have it at a trickle with no back pressure on the pump.

Thanks lads.

Truth be known, for most stills, if it wouldn't burn out due to continuous use, an automotive windshield washer pump can provide enough coolant... Don't go with the idea that bigger is better for coolant recirculation pumps...

yes all it takes is about 8L per hour, a bit more to be on the safe side.if you want to spend the money do so getting a more efficient pump not a larger one.

Cheers for the tips guys. The only reason I'm working with this pump is that it cost me nothing, so I thought it was worth working with.....should perform well with the ball valves.

I have a 350 gal per hour pump so it should be alright. The thing is it also depends on elevation and how much coil you have (and if you have a radiator or something) I have a small coil (1/8th if i remember) and 13 ft of it, plus a radiator after it. At the begining i had a 50 gal/h pump, and that worked but was struggling. My guess would be that even 200 gal/h would be good enought with my setup. So with your pump there is nothing to worry about. Plus if its controllable everything is fine.
